We don't have to have it all figured out. No one has it quite figured out for sure. Sure, we can (and absolutely should) plan accordingly, but we have no way of knowing how things will turn out.
We too often get in our own way of taking that next step because we don't have it all sorted out.
- Procrastination
- Perfectionism
- Fear
- Resistance
It takes shape in many forms.
It is in this uncertainty and not knowing that we need to be. We don't need an exact blueprint of what's ahead, because simply, we don't know for sure. We just need to know where we're going next and adjust accordingly. Constantly adjusting, but always in motion.
E. L. Doctorow was an American novelist, and he once said that "writing a novel is like driving a car at night. You can see only as far as your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way."
That's profound and wise advice for how we can approach not only a project, but life as a whole. We're so often stuck in our minds, projecting into the future or dwelling on the past that we lose sight of what’s in front of us.
What we set out for is like a long journey ahead. We may put a destination 1,500 miles away in our GPS for guidance when we set out on the road, but that doesn’t account for the traffic, bridges, rest stops, weather, and terrains ahead.
We have an idea of where we want to end up, but we're only going to get there by focusing on the road ahead.
