New year, new you? Don’t buy into that new year’s hype. Slow progress over time is the best progress in my opinion. BUT, I do love a fresh start and vision boards. I create one every year at the beginning of the year. It’s really fun to reflect on old vision boards to see what intentions and dreams came true. Throughout the year, it’s nice to have a constant reminder of your goals, dreams, and intentions.
Here are the simple 5 steps to creating this year’s vision board:
Step 1: Virtual vs. Paper Vision Board
I’ve been creating vision boards since 2016 when I learned about them from my friend, Ashlina Kaposta. She offers an incredible, in-depth workshop all about mood boards if you need more guidance and ready to dive into the nitty-gritty.
The first step to creating the mood board of your dreams is to decide on paper vs. digital. In the past, I’ve done both and now I prefer digital. I use them as a screensaver for my computer and iPad as a constant reminder of the year’s vision.
If you prefer a paper vision board, get an old school poster board, lots of magazines, and a stick of glue. For a digital mood board, I use Canva but you can use Google Slides, Photoshop, or whatever computer program you prefer.
Step 2: Prompts + Planning
Brainstorm your goals and intentions for the year or current project. This mood board works for any project, whether you’re revamping your wardrobe or decorating a corner of your home. The creative process is the same.
What’s your goal? How do you envision feeling? What’s your word of the year? What’s your focus this year? Finances, family, health, finding the dream job, or maybe you want a new car? These are personal to you.
Step 3: Find the Images
Now, you have your vision and need images to reflect your intentions. I use Pinterest and my own photographs for this step. You can do the same or look on Google, Instagram, TikTok, magazines, or books as the possibilities are endless.
Step 4: Arrangement
I download all the images to my desktop and import them into Canva. Move around the images until you're happy with the placement. I like a balance of color, black and white. When you look at the vision board, it should be obvious of your general intentions for the year. For me, I’m interested in upping my fitness game, creating chic spaces, elevating my wardrobe, and spending time with family.
Step 5: Voila!
It’s that simple. I arrange my vision boards vertically and horizontally depending on the usage. I use mine for screensavers, Instagram feed + stories, and Postcards from Paris of course, so I need portrait and landscape versions. If you create your own vision board, please post them and tag me on Instagram at @allison.crawford. Until then, have a fabulous weekend and take care. See you in the New Year!
