Do you want more of that in your life?
This key question directs my every conversation. My internal dialogue too.
“The Law of Attraction states that whatever you focus on, think about, read about, and talk about intensely, you’re going to attract more of into your life.” — Jack Canfield
LoA will magnify whatever I focus upon. Like a laser painting a target, I grow my world from the thoughts I host in my head. More so when I speak them out loud. Or write them down…
No WAY do I want to be sloppy about that. I’m not spending one more moment than necessary, focused where the sun don’t shine…
But it’s true!
It’s horrible. It’s awful. It’s distressing… I know. The ‘truth’ can be all of these and more.
Still, no matter how compelling the story, the moment I’m feeling that icky, soul-sucking feeling, the question: Do you want more of that in your life? shows me the choice I am making.
Mulling will mushroom this experience into more.
A compassionate encounter with sadness or distress, that’s a natural part of life’s tapestry. Negative emotions are my healthy, inner guides.
Downloading a painful experience is vital. Whether we pour it out onto the page, to a friend, or a trained listener; it’s important to allow painful emotions to move through us and to be released from our systems. There’s a time for offloading, for sure.
Picking over distress, for any length of time, however, that’s another matter… As sadness soaks in, or weariness swamps me, I know my puppy-mind is in need.
In these moments, I picture my mind as a red cocker-spaniel, offering me a filthy, stinking carcass she’s found in a bog nearby…
The carcass will be a sad, sad story — mine or someone else’s — of love lost; of ill-health; ill-will; mistreatment or misfortune… The carcass of contrast. A natural encounter as we walk the circle of life.
Is the carcass real? Yes.
Is it a healthy part of life? Yes.
Do I want it in my home? NO!
Drop it!
If the sad story stays with me after the first wave of painful emotion, I know my puppy needs reminding to drop that stinky carcass.
My puppy-mind offers…
Still sad that Michael’s not here to give me hugs!
I ask myself…
Do I want more of that in my life?
I tell my puppy-mind…
Drop it!
Frustrated! My hip’s still aching, two years on from its cause…
Do I want more of that in my life? No?
Drop it!
I feel powerless to help one who is deeply, deeply hurt…
Do I want more of that in my life? No?
Drop it!
These days, after much practice, ‘Drop it!’ is often enough.
Leave it…
Sometimes, however, just like any puppy in training, the first ‘Drop it!’ instruction is not enough to have doglet leave her smelly find. As with any young pup in training, additional focus and repetition can be required.
But it’s really, really sad to have no hug today from Michael!
Drop it.
But it’s TRUE!
LEAVE it!
Come here for a treat.
Time to stop.
Breathe.
No future, no past, no story, no need.
I am perfect, whole and complete…
Good girl!
There’s no substitute to getting into the now, for stilling that puppy-dog mind!
Meditation is the ultimate story-stopper…
Come THIS way!
Then, I focus my puppy on where I want her to go. I imagine my inner being, Michael et al, calling me to focus on what I DO want more of in my world…
Come THIS way!
Smell this lemon-rose!
Look around you at these gifts — so much love from friends and siblings!
Dance in the kitchen; feel the pleasure of moving your body to the beat…
Imagine relishing a new day’s adventures…
Never has there been a more blessed day in the history of the WORLD!
Feast on the feelings you want in this day!
Ease and eagerness,
Energy and fun,
Focus
Interest and calm
Awareness and appreciation
Kindness and more…
Just listing these emotions activates them inside me… LoA brings more for the feasting.
That’s more like it, I say!
Drop the story and focus on desire
As I coach myself and others, dropping the story and focusing on what we want is always the core of the alignment we crave. It’s not rocket science, but it’s easy to lose sight of it.
Why? Because the story is compelling. It’s used to holding sway. We’ve been taught that it’s up to us to solve the problem. We ask ourselves a range of natural, but ultimately unhelpful questions…
Why has this happened?
How do I fix this?
What’s the solution?
Where did this come from?
How do I stop it from happening again?
What’s wrong with me?
And more…
“You cannot solve a problem with the same mind that created it.” — Albert Einstein
Let’s go further.
You cannot solve a problem with the mind.
You’ve got to go to the emotions…
Instead of the usual mind-based questions, asking yourself, Do you want more of this in your life? tunes to your emotionalguidance.
If the answer is ‘YES!’ — great, keep relishing. If you’re enjoying problem solving, that’s fine, you’re in the perfect place to milk the joy out of life.
If the answer is ‘NO!’ — great, you’re doing a grand job of stepping back to choose what you want to come next…
If you tell your pup to ‘Drop it!’ and ‘Leave it!’ and she’s still going back to that stinky carcass of a story, it might help you to do one or more of the following…
Remember that Law of Attraction (LoA) is the engine of life.
You are the driver. You steer. LoA does the rest. You are NOT the engine. There’s nothing for you to fix or figure here. LoA does it for you.
You paint the target. Relish thoughts of what you want to grow. You can leave a carcass behind and it will never appear again.
But you have to leave it entirely. You can’t be secretly worrying, picking it over, ruminating or more…
Go to the emotions.
If you are stressing over a story, retelling it in your mind… negative emotions are driving that behaviour. When you name them, send them love, acknowledge their guidance, you will feel instant relief.
Appreciate on the move.
Moving is a great way to release the energy of negative emotions. Move in ways that please you and focus attention as you do it on an aspect of life you enjoy. Start softly and build into an appreciation rampage.
You could walk round the block finding something to appreciate about every sight or sound you encounter.
Make a game out of it.
Appreciate the vibrancy of traffic lights or the leaf canopy overhead.
Enjoy breathing in and breathing out…
Pick a feeling state you’d like more of — appreciate it into more, even if you don’t feel it yet…
Before you tell that story to yourself or another, stop.
Ask: Do you want more of that in your life?
This one key question makes it so easy to decide what pondering works best. Many times each day, and in every interaction, this is my North Star, it always guides me Home.
It doesn’t matter how ‘true’ or ‘right’ the story is. If it isn’t something I want more of, it’s given no air time. End of.
When you know about LoA, you know it makes sense.
It’s glorious!
So freeing. So powerful. So telling…
Think about it… What difference would this one question make, when you consider the next segment of your day?
Do you want more of that in your life?
