I have, in recent weeks, been preparing for Philadelphia’s upcoming Zinefest, where I will be selling books, stickers, and zines. Now, if you’re unfamiliar with zines—
Oh, uh… right… the info…
10-5pm on Saturday, December 2, 2023, at Temple University’s glorious Mitten Hall!
Hmmm. Maybe… just to be safe…
Mitten Hall is at 1913 N. Broad Street, Philadelphia PA!
Now, if you’re unfamiliar with zines, they are a low-fi publication, made chiefly to waste staples and share one’s passion. Could be art. Could be stories. Or it could be terrible poetry. I’m not trying to say that in a judgy way— lord knows I’ve written my fair amount of terrible poetry. Lots of stuff about my soul. General rule of thumb—the more often the phrase “my soul” appears in a poem, the worse it is.
Six-Penny Anthems: Comics And Whimsy
I have prepared three 20-page zines for this celebration of the homemade. First is a compilation of various Six-Penny Anthems comics. Some of you might have seen these humorous nuggets on the Instagram as well, if you’re one of those society folks. Anywhoo, if you’d like this zine, consider attending zinefest!
Philadelphians, Volume I.
The second zine I’ll be selling is a collection of drawings I made in 2021 whilst bounding about Philadelphia. It contains some of my favorite drawings ever, including the two old guys who hang out at Independence Mall, the angry lady at Girard Station, and the Cat People portrait. Get yourself a copy at Zinefest! Glorious Mitten Hall!
Man In A Bog
The third zine I’m selling is a collection of some very complex drawings I’ve done to accompany a few unreleased books. They arguably took more work than a zine deserves. Kim thinks I should have made prints instead. To offset this dangerous hiccup in my marriage, I’ve taken all the drawings here and made them available as prints on Society6 (click on an image to be magically whisked there!)
“I Can’t See The Soup” Kid
Lastly I’ll be giving out this sticker— it’s based on a drawing I did for a book where a bunch of kids are looking for soup. It’s…uh… still in the works.
If you live in Philadelphia, you might have already seen one of these, because I’ve been putting them up everywhere. But if not, you can certainly get a bunch when you see me at Zinefest. I’ve been told it’s a pointless sticker, because no one can follow it back to me— there’s no url, no QR code. But that’s how I like it, goddammit! Just a thing I made, out there in the world, making me happy when I see it. Feeding my soul and the souls of others—growing a soul of its own!
Hey! That was a haiku!!!
These look wonderful!
If I may, and If you would like to share. I wonder what is your opinion (or a community one) regarding digital zines?
I recently befriended a French Illustrator that works with a really cool print project, but Is only on print, and because I live in a pineapple under the sea I cannot get one. I did asked if they had a digital version but they said its not currently on their plans. And I do understand it, resources, projects, timelines, etc.
Thank you for sharing the images, your art is gorgeous!
