Video: Is It a Dr. Seuss Book?

A lesson about the characteristics of a Dr. Seuss Book

Most of my read aloud time during Dr. Seuss week is devoted to reading Dr. Seuss books. Not that original and probably not a surprise. But I do reserve one day—two read aloud sessions—to teach my students a little about the man himself. During the morning read aloud time, I read (portions of) Dr. Seuss: The Great Doodler by Kate Klimo.

And in the afternoon I do a lesson about the tell-tale characteristics of a Dr. Seuss book. There are six things students can look for according to this poster I got years ago (you’ll see it in the video) and then laminated, stuck in a file, and pull out every year since. Knowing you probably can’t get your hands on the poster (and just in case I ever misplaced mine), I put together this sheet. Some years, we complete this sheet together. Or, the students can try the checklist for themselves when looking at/reading a Dr. Seuss book on their own.

Link to this sheet so you can add it to your files.
