Happy New Year. We’re almost through January, and I’m still finding my footing. I have been nestled into big books of ideas, puzzles, dreaming, and writing/painting. I do love January for feeling like a fresh start, and for being the depth of winter, where there’s a seasonal excuse to be on hiatus.
Here is a video of a new painting I’m working on, along with thoughts that have fed it.
And some details:
I mention Szilvia Molnar’s paperback release of The Nursery, coming up at First Light Books, in a conversation with Carrie Fountain, Katie Bender, and myself. (Getting the band back together, after our discussion of art & motherhood at Prizer Arts & Letters, during my show there last May.)
I also site Caliban and the Witch, and the fantastic podcast Book on Fire, where they discuss the book in depth (it’s more engaging than the book itself).
Also in February, Austinites will have a chance to dance with, watch, and engage with my mentor, Deborah Hay. She will be leading weekly dance classes, and performing a two-week nightly residency. All extremely affordable and accessible. Give yourself the tremendous gift of exploring her work.
From Deborah: Monday through Friday, Feb 12 – 23, 2024 at 7 PM, I will perform a 15- 20 minute dance in a private Travis Heights studio location. In the course of the hour you are invited to participate at any time and as you wish. This could take the form of writing, moving, singing, talking with someone, or more. As community, in this context, you are invited to generously attend to your own wishes and desires without imposing your wishes and desires onto someone else. You might want to bring a notebook.
I imagine this like a LIBRARY in which we each pursue our interests together.
I’ll leave you with one last sweet image with Gioia, taken in November by Lauren Slusher (along with the one at the top).
I hope you’re well, I hope you find peace within yourself, and that it ripples outward to all.
I really enjoyed the video, Caroline. Very interesting. Through Ancestry my niece Kris discovered we have a relative who was one of the women burned as witches at Salem. And I have considered in the past that the way I live would have been very suspect! Like you, I have been thinking a lot about history and feeling excited about new things I'm learning regarding early settlers in NC. Love and hugs to you and Gioia. Oh, and happy mom and dad's anniversary, all those years ago, today!
