The main task of Just FYI Pod’s first season is to explore the “20 Most Spiritually Significant Films of All Time.” On this episode, my cohost Amy Welborn and I discuss the #15 film on our respective lists. Amy has chosen John Patrick Shanley’s romantic comedy Joe Versus the Volcano (1990), starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. I have selected Christopher Nolan’s landmark superhero film The Dark Knight (2008), starring Christian Bale and Heath Ledger.
Nota bene: Amy isn’t sure if Joe Versus the Volcano is actually a romcom, and I’m pretty sure that The Dark Knight is essentially a cinematic gloss on the later writings of Danish thinker Søren Kierkegaard (1813-55). Hot takes? Listen and find out. As ever, links are provided below. Please like, share, and comment!
Finally got to listen to this one, and I'm surprised Rene Girard didn't factor into the philosophy portion of the discussion! The ending of Dark Knight has "The Scapegoat" written all over it. (Now that I think about it, so does sacrificing someone to a volcano!)
