JUST FYI POD: CULTURE
SEASON 1, EPISODE 14: “Our 20 Most Spiritually Significant Films of All Time: #9”
The main task of Just FYI Pod: Culture’s first season is to explore the “20 Most Spiritually Significant Films of All Time.” On this episode, my cohost Amy Welborn and I discuss the #9 film on our respective lists. I explore Stanley Kubrick’s 1971 dystopian satire A Clockwork Orange, based on the eponymous novel by Anthony Burgess (1917-93), while Amy examines Andrew Niccol’s 1997 sci-fi drama Gattaca. While these films are different in tenor and in tone, they both use a futuristic landscape to probe questions about human nature, morality, and politics in an age of science and technology.
On a different note, discerning readers may have noticed a slight change in the title of today’s podcast—from Just FYI Pod to Just FYI Pod: Culture. This is for good reason. Later this week, I will be launching a new podcast “season” with Clark J. Elliston—a longtime academic colleague and, indeed, an old friend. Since Clark and I plan to examine various issues in theology, philosophy, and higher ed, our discussions will be dubbed Just FYI Pod: Ideas. With this in mind, Amy and I think that it would make sense to slightly tweak the title of our own conversations, which will remain anchored in topics such as movies, TV, and literature. Thus Just FYI Pod: Culture it is!
