On disrupting your process
It’s just very much like how in a dream, everything makes sense, but then when you think about it, when you’re awake, you realize it doesn’t make sense at all. It’s a good reminder of what’s possible. I’ve written about this before too, but the next line, the next word could always be anything. Sometimes we forget that when we’re writing, we feel really stuck and there are very few options. He’s really great for getting back into that place where you realize how free you are.
I had gotten too used to thinking, “I know this is going to work out because I’ve done it 10 times and it always worked out.
How To Start Writing Again
That story about a single father is still in stagnation stage. No words have been added since forever. I am guilty that work, rest and workout have completely stolen all my time to write. Too tired to let my brain rest and write with my stream of consciousness. Now it seems like it is all excuses. Jami’s newsletter comes to the rescue at the perfect timing.
The most helpful strategy for me is to look at the work every day even if it’s just for the briefest of time. To touch it, think about it, so it still feels fresh and luminous in my mind. I will just open up whatever I’ve been working on and re-read it for five minutes, ten minutes, maybe write a little note to myself about it, even rework one sentence just for fun.
But if you want to feel like you’re still connected to your project and are trying to be an active participant in it even when time does not allow it, I suggest a daily, gentle acknowledgment of your work.
