Hi all. To be perfectly honest, I don’t know if these monthly open threads are worthwhile or not. What do you think? Is this something I should keep doing? Or are there plenty of places for discussion to occur? I guess open threads are the subject of this month’s open thread.
Hello all! As a new subscriber, I’ve found this space to be very unique. A community of genuine human beings who discuss real world, taboo, and thought provoking topics. Incredible. I commend you Chris for creating such an opportunity for connection. I look forward to seeing all this space has to offer. So to answer the original question, keep them coming!
I don't participate much but I appreciate the opportunity every month. It reminds me that this community is present and active. That is comforting. Also wanted to drop in and say I really enjoyed the most recent episode with Liza Marron. Episodes like these - of normal people living off the beaten path, sharing stories of their successful and fulfilling lives are what I love about TS. Reminds me of being 19, listening to TOMAs, and feeling like there are so many ways to live an enriched life. 9 years on, my 20s have not gone as I thought they would, but hearing the stories on TS have made me quick to embrace the changes along the way. Thanks for that Chris! Even writing about it here I feel I am expressing more than I intended. That's the beauty of these threads.
Hi Chris. This is the first I've seen of it, because I clicked on the link in my inbox. I like it cos I've wanted to say Hi for years! Hi! I recorded an audio once but chickened out sending it. But a brief but massive thank you to for your getting me through tough times. I took your advice and explored things that helped: Yoga, cold showers, meditation, psychedelics in nature to name a few. You've had a big impact on my open mind in many more ways than that though, and it's spread out on to my family and students.
My humble thanks to you my one way friend. You've enhanced the meaning in my life. I can more readily perceive it and appreciate it. I can be a better person for everyone. You played no small part in that :-)
Keep them coming Chris. I enjoy this form of communication. It's nice to see what other Tangentialists are thinking but I do think it helps if you provide the topic and we all stick to it.
Not sure how the war in Israel got into this thread. So yes, I like open discussions when there is a topic at hand. What I don't like is when people bring in topics unrelated to the subject. I do not see the purpose in just letting people sound off on anything anytime. If that is what you mean by an open thread.
Please keep them coming. I definitely fall in the “always enjoy reading them; almost never comment” camp, which I’d like to change. I’ve become very wary of engaging with basically any internet platform after purging social media from my life, but this is a space I can say has real value and meaning to me. Cheers y’all!
I appreciate these open threads. I’ll admit that sometimes I want to pose questions to this group, or offer thoughts, but if it’s already past the first week into the month, I think “better just wait until next month and try to post early to get people’s ideas.” I guess I worry about a good conversation just getting washed out in the waves of a new month.. so it makes me a little less inclined to engage. I never really post anywhere on the internet, but it’s cool just knowing this is a very special group of likeminded folks so I’d love to engage more. Is there a way to make a few topical threads that are less fleeting? I may not even really know how to use Substack, so sorry if that’s already a thing. There’s also the truth that a fresh thread each month is kind of nice. Reminding us just to tap into the river and see how it’s flowing this month. Cheers to you all.
Has there just been one? I started reading it and was getting alot out of the one about moving out of the US and if so where. I wanted to finish it and comment but now I can't find it. Does it still exist? There were 31 comments. I do like the idea of the open thread and find the comments insightful and thoughtful.
Getting a personal thank you from you Chris following each subscription payment underscores why you are the only podcaster I subscribe to...Of course ,besides your gratitude, your no nonsense unassuming wisdom ,basic good sense and resistance to crumbling societal expectations helps keep my boat afloat in these crazy, turbulent and chaotic times....I am older than you and know without doubt, just how fortunate I was to travel regularly during the 70-80s ..of course there was still war and strife back then but,the world was generally a calmer and, more ,pleasant place....there was no internet so it was much easier to be disconnected from the status quo hard reality ......there was, however, also more bipartisanship and less of the present toxic intolerant, tribalism .
I have an optimistic feeling that the brazen and blatant lies and hypocrisy now becoming ever more apparent from the Gaza brutal insanity continues ...and it’s support from US and UK and other governments and individuals ...is finally getting through to the complacent majority who, those unbiased thinkers, are likewise appalled at the deaths of so many innocent women and children in this mega destruction of homes and land ...of those who have long rightfully belonged to it ......
People like Kristal and Saagar on Breaking Point,Prof Norman Finklestein ,Gabriel Mate and sons and others are enlightening us to the present and, historical truth to this situation....also,Owen Jones and,Michael Walker in the UK.......
......change comes via awareness and...besides this Gaza crisis ,there is much else that is in dire need of informed awareness ...and change for a desperately needed better world ...A good life is founded on good people and, most of us have those good people keeping us centred......besides friends and family, the host of intelligent and brave podcasters and commentators -- free of the mainstream biases and agendas ...I feel a threshold has been reached and, despite despite efforts of the mainstream players, there is already too much momentum for such voices to be silenced ..thanks again Chris for being in the forefront of this needed sense and honesty .....saludos jfk ( very lower case)
I would keep them up but Friedrich, I read them but dont comment. I also dont read the lengthy diatribes. I prefer to read comments that are concise, cogent and limited in bias. But then again I have be accuse of being a bit banal and a prig at times
I agree with the others. It would be great if you continued them. I emjoy them all (Well, being Canadian, I do not enjoy some of the American political discussions - find it all difficult to conceptualize.). It warms my heart to know you are all out there.
Keep 'em coming. The people here are the thoughtful type & lots have views they might not otherwise have much chance to air or discuss with other thoughtful people.
I like them and I’ll make a bigger effort to contribute.

There is more value than what it may seem at the surface, there is a level of intelligence here that is severely lacking in most of the inter webs.

A calm space for thoughts with a chilled real community, GOLD. Thanks!
how can anything open and community be not-worthwhile? ;)
I like using the open threads as a meeting room to discuss what you and your guests have been talking about recently.
Saludos good folks! Thanks for reminding me that there is a modicum of sanity and well being in this world. Breath of fresh air this is.
i read em, eventually sometimes well after last activity... have commented, but mostly wont. still prefer them being there than not
Keep them coming, by writing, speech or video

I enjoy seeing the threads. Sometimes I comment in them and sometimes l read and appreciate others' comments when I don't post anything myself.

I believe, I wouldn't miss them.

I read them, but almost never comment. My bad. Please continue these.
Keep em coming!!
Keep’em! You make good prompts and even if people aren’t commenting as often they’re reading what people say, seems to give a lot of people value.
I listen to most of your podcasts and read some of these open threads. It’s all pretty great.
Keep 'em coming. The people here are the thoughtful type & lots have views they might not otherwise have much chance to air or discuss with other thoughtful people.
Love them! Don't comment that often but I always spend some time reading them.
Try it for 6 months, then decide
Keep the open thread, well, open 😜 Always good to see what other Tangientialistas have on their mind.
+1 for continue open threads. It's the quality of the contributors that sets these discussions apart from the rest.
I like the community here more than most internet discussion forums.
Keep them coming. I rarlely repond but I do read them.
