Wendron are hosting an afternoon of appreciation!
The club has come such a way in a relatively short time and recognise the support they have had over this period
Wendron United are hoping for a bit of a football do on Saturday!
You can imagine how busy everyone connected with the football club must be on a match day as they put out five teams each week, but this coming Saturday they are looking forward to an even busier time as they are inviting past players and managers to their Underlane home as recognition for the part they have all played in establishing and helping the club get to where it is today.
The football club’s current home came about in the 1980s after having to move from their previous ground and following the Wendron Cricket Club earlier acquiring three fields at Underlane.
With voluntary labour the cricket facilities were built and opened in 1982 and while further improvements were added in 1986 a football section was formed.
It only initially played the occasional friendly fixture but grew sufficiently that it had enough players to enter the Falmouth/Helston League with two teams for season 1987-88.
The first team, who are currently leading the West division of the South West Peninsula League, won Division 2 in season 1989-90 with matches being played on a hired field about half a mile away from the Clubhouse. However, to progress the aim had to be to develop a football pitch on the main site.
Between 1995 to 1997 it must have been a momentous period for the football club as not only did they celebrate winning Division One of the Falmouth/Helston League but a new pitch was built costing in the region of £30,000.
The club joined the Cornwall Combination League in 1998-99 at which time they were known as Wendron CC United and around 2007 the club changed its name to Wendron United.
So much has happened in a relatively short time and so this Saturday, all those that have helped over the past 40 years are invited to an afternoon of football.
This is to include a 20 minute each half friendly fixture, under the impressive floodlights, as a sign of appreciation for all those who have played such a pivotal role in the club’s history.
If you're interested in playing or joining everyone on Saturday contact Peter Thorne for more information. The plan is to meet at the club from 2:30pm onwards for the afternoon’s “fest of football” which will be capped in a reunion fixture of 20 minutes each way at 5:00pm.
As you can see from the photo, the cricket field is there, but where’s the football ground?
