Happy Friday Friends!
Another week done and dusted.
My time at sea came to a close, and not a day too soon because it’s back to business over here at Culture House. Rae has been crunching numbers and reviewing decks, Nicole has been kicking the tires on production plans and budgets across film, TV & Immersive, Mikhael is dreaming up how Culture House Immersive will surprise and delight, and I’ve been scheming all the ways our stories will come alive in the world during 2024. It’s been a busy week.
We are officially 1 month out from the premiere of our next series, Black Twitter: A People's History (on Hulu May 9, mark your calendar), and we will be popping up in cities around the country for screenings and other celebrations. Interested in hosting a screening or event? Hit up Esme@Culture.House and let us know! We will be in NYC, LA, ATL, and DC, but you know we love to see our BB's off the coasts.
TRENDING: Gangs of cackling, happy, accomplished women
We have a great time at CH, we really do. And there are about to be some fun, highly gram-able shenanigans that are coming up this spring. There will be outrageously good fits, touched up roots, glammed out selfies, cackling gangs of happy accomplished women that love and support one another roving the streets - and we will post tons of pics about it. It's gonna be great, and it compels me to take a moment to re-center a couple things:
1. We all make mistakes. All the time. I mean it, allllllllll the time. We are not perfect, we do not have it all figured out, we are trying hard and on some days and in some situations that's just not enough. And that's TOTALLY FINE (She said, screaming into a pillow.) Mistakes are part of our charm!!
2. We only pull it off because of each other and the support, help, guidance we get from others. I go on and on about community and interdependence in this newsletter because its ev-er-ry-thing.
3. "Our stories are singular, but our destiny is shared"* Our wins are part of a much, much larger story. As I mentioned, Rae was crunching some of our numbers this week in order to track our progress to goals that we set for ourselves and our work. Between 2021 and 2023, Culture House has put ~ $12million dollars in the pockets of Women and BIPOC artists and creatives. That is why we are doing what we are doing. Not only is it fun, but it feeds the lives and dreams of the community around us in the broadest and deepest sense.
We are going to do a deeper dive into the economic impact of the work we do later this year, but I am notoriously bad at keeping good news to myself.
IN THE CULTURE - BOOK CLUB SELECTION
UNDIPLOMATIC BY DEESHA DYER
Deesha and I worked together at the White House and have stayed checking on and rooting for each other since - that was enough for me to shout about her new book from the rooftops, BUT this book is a loving portrait of everything we love, think about and work for at Culture House: betting on yourself even when it's scary, getting to the mountaintop and making room for others, and staying in the truth even when it's uncomfortable. Congratulations Deesha!
About UNDIPLOMATIC: In this vivid portrayal from a true “around the way girl” on the personal impact of the Obama presidency, Deesha shares her road map from imposter to impact. In Undiplomatic, she invites you on a journey of self-discovery where she overcame doubt, unearthed true love for herself and learned that your unique worth is not something to be earned, but something inherently deserved. Uplifting, funny and candid, Deesha’s story shows what happens when you embrace authenticity, and the joy and freedom that awaits. This book is for those who think they don’t belong, they don’t deserve and they don’t qualify. An entertaining, inspiring and engaging story that boldly confronts imposter syndrome and gives readers the insight, motivation, laughs and guts to do the same.
