An interesting project by an individual trying to help in the Gaza Strip. We asked a few questions
Bitcoin for Palestine uses the Geyser.fund platform to raise funds to help children, the poor and the elderly in the Gaza Strip.
He uses satoshi to buy things for children and the elderly
This project was founded and is run by a single person named Youssef. He lives in the Gaza Strip, which has long been occupied by the Israeli armed forces. He raises funds mainly through Geyser.fund, a crowdfunding platform that provides a crowdfunding solution for raising satoshi through the Lightning Network. The project was founded on 29 May this year and has so far raised 5.5 million satoshi - or something around CZK 36,000. The conflict between Israel and Palestine has been going on for centuries and experts say it will never end. In most of the European media, the conflict is presented as a religious one, but it has now naturally moved into the political sphere. In addition, modern weapons are adding lethal force to the conflict that was not available in earlier times. There are, of course, many civilians in the Gaza Strip who are suffering and dying, and their standard of living is also rapidly declining as a result of the ongoing conflict. The following video provides a brief overview of the conflict.
Hamas, which is considered a terrorist organisation in Europe, is also active in the Gaza Strip. In the Gaza Strip, this organisation only helps people who are Hamas sympathisers. They call themselves the Sons of Hamas. However, this paramilitary organisation has no regard for ordinary civilians. The following are some questions that Youssef answered and added how bitcoin is helping in the Gaza Strip. In our country, bitcoin is primarily an interesting investment and a good store of value. But in war-torn countries, it is often the only way to send money to someone or keep it safe. In South Africa, for example, a large part of the population does not have bank accounts and only keeps their money in cash. But they can lose it in a robbery, so bitcoin is the only safe way to hold their savings. Children there earn satoshi from foreign visitors and have their seed stamped on pads and connected with a single screw. But now back to Gaza.
A few questions about bitcoin in Palestinian Gaza
To start, please introduce yourself and describe what you do.
My name is Youssef. I live in Gaza and I worked for a long time in a charity organization. But because of the theft by some people, I decided to quit and today I help through bitcoin. It is safer and helps the poor, orphans and the elderly.
Where did you first come across bitcoin and the Lightning Network in Gaza?
I have a friend from the UK who told me about bitcoin and showed me how fast and secure it is. This friend used to send me donations through Western Union, but later we started using bitcoin and Lightning Network.
What bitcoin and Lightning Network related apps do you use? Do you have a good internet connection in your city?
I use Binance and the Wallet of Satoshi app. The internet connection is stable and available everywhere in the city.
How many people in your area use bitcoin and Lightning Network?
Only a few people. I myself use bitcoin to move money from abroad. But here, I convert money into dollars and pay everything in dollars. You can't normally pay with bitcoin anywhere here.
How much does it cost to feed one person for a day? The usual breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks.
Approximately $35 per person.
In Europe, Hamas is considered a terrorist organization. But you mentioned that they are helping in Gaza. Can you describe how?
Sure, Hamas is helping in Gaza, but only the sons of Hamas. They don't care about ordinary civilians.
Can you describe a typical day for you in Gaza?
Most days are tiring. I look for different people or families who are on the edge of extreme poverty. I find out what they need and try to buy and bring it to them.
Thanks for the brief glimpse into Gaza. Is there anything you want to say in closing?
All of us here hope that people will stand behind the Palestinians and the people of Gaza.
