Something Tells Me This Is Going To Be The Beginning Of A Beautiful Friendship
Or something like that
It always begins with something small
I’ve been looking for a way to start, a way to grow my body of work, for a long time. The world of traditional publishing is challanging for both fiction and for journalism, and I find myself torn between the two. Where do I focus my attention? What world should have its grip on my portfolio from here on?
I don’t necessarily have to choose. After all, I find myself often giving little lectures on media analysis to my friends over dinner or gushing about the use of framing devices on the way back from a movie with my roommate. I’m sure they would much rather I share those thoughts with you, a dedicated group of readers, than assault their ears any longer with college lectures on what Checkov’s Gun really means.
That’s why I’m really here.
I’m carving out a place here for me to share my analysis of media in a more formal setting, with essays and critiques and, occasionally, short stories related to current projects. I intend to fill this page with not just my own thoughts, but research as well. I would like to share the processes of critical analysis outside of a college classroom to make it accessable anyone, regardless of background.
Dig around in the bones of your stories!
This shouldn’t just be a space where I scream at the walls and scribble on whiteboards with nobody in the room. Shout back at me! Doodle on the board with me! Each piece of media means something different to each person who it passes through, and I want to see what filters through each of you, how you may have understood each story differently from me.
Some Specifics:
As of this moment, this is simply an entertaining project for me and a way to build my portfolio of work. I may eventually offer exclusive content for paid subscribers—for now, though, all of my articles will be free to read. If you like what I’m doing and want to through a little money my way, I would really appreciate it! I’ll make announcements down the line about exclusive or paywalled content, but rest assured that most of the articles I post will be free to access for anyone willing to read them.
That’s all for now.
You’ll hear more from me soon—with my first series of essays on the importance and use of tropes in storytelling—but right now I’m just happy to start this new chapter with you. Subscribe for notifications when I post essays, short stories, poetry and more! Let me know what you’d like me to cover, what you think, or just whatever is inspiring you today.
