Welcome back to George Orwell’s 1984. We are on chapter 2 as part of this new podcast I am starting exclusive to Substack only.
This is a short chapter, but it serves to demonstrate how people live in chronic fear in a totalitarian state — always afraid that someone is going to report them to the authorities for saying something contrary to the political orthodoxy of the moment.
But are we not living under the same circumstances?
People are terrified of being suspended from a social media platform, being hauled before a human rights commission or being charged with a hate crime — for saying or writing some sentence that might offend someone.
Enjoy this latest installment. And do not be surprised if you see your own reality reflected in the novel.
