First Picture in Colour After Fifty-Eight Years
First Picture in Colour After Fifty-Eight Years
David MacGregor
Geez man
Years mean nothing
Prussian General Blucher
Broke Napoleon
When he was age 72
At Waterloo
And things were likely tougher
Then
For us oldies
Than now
You think
Bro?
Ok
Maybe not
*****
In the final year
Of Art School
At Fisher Park High School
In 1960
I painted in colour
At age 17
(See framed photo below
(Of one of my 1960 paintings)
Some ppl see that
Painting as abstract
But for me
It is an automobile
Going through a snowstorm
Though my art teacher
Scolded me
That certain things in that image
Could never be true
Like, for example,
My Idea
Of Hegel and the American Revolution
******
In 2008
In Italy
I drew a few places
(An example below
(From Florence
(blow-up of 2-inch by 3-inch drawing)
In black and white
But no colour
******
In 1976
I got married
In London
England
Near Euston Station
St. Pancras Register Office
(Picture below)
Where J.M. Keynes and
Famed Russian ballerina
Lydia Lopokova
Were wed
In 1925
*****
hig·gle·dy-pig·gle·dy
Everything in this poem
Is higgledy-piggledy
******
No big reveal
But in November 2018
I was invited
To accompany my Sensei
And his family
To Jamaica
About a year after
My cancer doctor
Said the cancer
Was gone
*****
My Sensei and his family
Soon tired of me
And left me on my own
To wander the beaches
Of Jamaica
Tough assignment
Luckily
I brought some coloured pencils
And some drawing paper
Not sure why
Were,
We were just a few miles
Away
American Werewolf in London.
From James Bond’s
Golden Eye
****
Sure the perspective is off
And it looks amateurish
Hey, my first real drawing
Since 1975
As the owner of the famed resort
Said
It’s not Picasso
But it’s good
*****
And let me tell you
It’s in colour
(Color for American readers
(Means the same)
