Jonathan Sugarman: My Big Fat Irish Banking Scandal
Every country has had one - some more than one. This is the inside story of Jonathan Sugarman's one man fight to do what was right and all the forces that have been hell-bent on burying him.
Those of you who used to read the Golem XIV blog will know all about Jonathan Sugarman. But I thought it would be good to remind people just what he uncovered and just how it was and still is being covered up. Like our interview with Chris Blackhurst about HSBC’s drug-money laundering, it’s only when you hear the details and the sheer scale of the story that you being to appreciate just how entirely rotten and pointless bank regulation and oversight actually is.
In some ways I wish Jonathan’s story was now a piece of history. Just something to remind ourselves of the bad old days we have now left behind. But it’s not. Jonathan’s story is an indictment not of yesterdays failings but today’s. No one wanted to hear him back then. The same people and a whole not of new ones, still refuse to hear him today. If anything at all has been learnt it is that as long as all those in power and all those who hope to be in power, and all the financial regulators, not just in Ireland but in Europe and in all the capitals of all the nations whose banks use Ireland to do what they can’t at home, all agree to ignore and stonewall the Jonathans of this world, then they can carry on with impunity. And sadly they have been proved right. We have let them shit on us and our children. And they are laughing all the way to the banks we bail out for them.
