STORY TIME
Recently, I attended a work dinner.
The options were: chicken breast, prime rib, mashed potatoes, salad, dinner rolls, and a mixed-berry cobbler.
My activity that day consisted of:
CrossFit class (strength + metabolic conditioning)
18 holes of golf
So, high intensity + low intensity activity, but constant movement (and in the heat).
I knew that I could “afford” to “eat a lot.” So, I did.
I had (1) plate of everything + (1) plate of salad & chicken breast + mixed-berry cobbler.
Out of a table of (8), I’m willing to say I had more than everyone there. Which, is proper.
Here’s why..
UNDERSTANDING ENERGY BALANCE
Food is calories and calories are energy.
There are (3) inescapable truths here:
Energy In < Energy Out (Body Weight Loss, Potential Body Fat Reduction)
Energy In > Energy Out (Body Weight Gain, Potential Body Fat Increase)
Energy In = Energy Out (Body Weight Maintenance, Potential Body Fat Maintenance/Improvement)
My energy out that day was HIGH (as it is 5-6 days/week). So, I NEEDED those calories (energy) for refuel.
THE COMMENT
The funny part of this story, and the motivation behind it, was a comment I heard third-hand.
“I don’t know how Eli stays that fit, he put down a lot of food!”
The reality is, the more active you are, the more fuel you need.
The reason me, or anyone else, is able to “stay that fit” is because we maintain proper energy balance.
It’s that simple.

Have a great weekend, everyone! Thanks for reading.
