Listen closely, you’ll hear a man singing along “Iron, Lion, Zion” by Bob Marley.
I used to carry this bag that had the face of Bob Marley on it. So every time I was walking away, I like to think I was leaving people with Bob Marley’s cute smile to look at. These days, I no longer have the bag, but I keep stumbling upon Bob Marley. Lately, it has been his songs in the daladala (that’s the public bus). Just today, I sat next to this old man who sang along and danced in his seat every time Bob Marley played. So here is a little poem from sitting next to him.
A dance
To look inside the eyes of some people,
is to feel some weight of freedom.
A seventies reggae playing on the radio,
the man on crutches is set like a perfect frequency for this stereo.
He sings alongside the voice of Bob Marley
Feels like a soul’s rally
“One loveeeee” two words from his lips
offering me some solace, some script.
“Three things my crutches can carry
A car crash broken bone,
A survivor’s guilt, and a dance.”
To look inside his eyes,
is to know freedom can start just like that.
A crutch,
some guts,
a dance.
Have you ever had a stranger inspire you to create something? Ever had a singer whose songs seem to be following you around? Or have you ever had a bag with someone’s face on it? Let me know in the comments! Lots of love to you!
I love this piece since it's so realistic indeed
This is simple but meaningful. Through simple words and easy wording this poem is simple only in diction, but not in what it really says or trying to say.
Good read!
