Gun bill & Voucher bill needing public comment; deadline extended for voucher bill
A dangerous gun bill has a hearing on Thursday (testimony due on Wed). The deadline for submitting testimony for the voucher bill is now Tuesday at 9:30 am.
Deadline for public comment: 9:30 am Tuesday
The original deadline for voucher bill SB 509 was 2:00 pm on Monday to provide time for printing the required 20 physical copies of each piece of testimony. But, we’ve now confirmed that the committee assistant will print the copies.
We’d love to get a ton of opposition testimony to shut this bill down. With the similar bill last year there were 63 opponents and 53 proponents. The majority or proponents were from one particular private school. Those parents would receive an annual refundable tax credit of $3,825 for each child not attending a public school—almost $12,000 for a family with three school aged children.
You can learn more about the bill in yesterday’s newsletter or in the Testimony Template where you can also find instructions for submitting testimony and talking points to help you craft your testimony. It’s fine to keep your testimony short & sweet.
Dangerous Gun Bill requiring public comment
Testimony for bill HB 2803 is due Wednesday at 9:00 am.
Less than a month after the shooting at the Super Bowl parade, leaders in Topeka have called for a hearing on bill HB 2803 that would weaken gun laws and make Kansans less safe by prohibiting Kansas law enforcement officers from enforcing federal gun laws.
This bill is unconstitutional, nonsensical, and a waste of time and taxpayer money. Missouri passed a similar law and an inordinate amount of time and money was spent on litigation that ultimately found the law unconstitutional.
We are asking Kansans who are looking to our leadership to focus on gun sense solutions that make our kids and communities safer to submit public testimony in opposition of bill HB 2803. We can let leaders in Topeka know we are tired of the continual efforts to weaken gun laws by submitting a large volume of testimony.
You can submit written public testimony only, or provide oral testimony in-person or via WebEx. Click the link below or go to bit.ly/HB2803testimony. And please ask your friends to submit testimony. We are making it EASY!
