Coasys - A DAO LLC in the Holoverse
An Agent-Centric Approach to Search and Collective Intelligence
Note: This is the second article following our ADAM/Flux issue. Since that time (19 May 2023) the team, led by Nicolas Luck and Josh Parkin, have created a DAO LLC called Coasys, which has additional projects discussed below.
With the ever increasing complexity of our data rich environment, the Coasys team are addressing the metacrisis through invigorating our collective intelligence capacity. The current digital landscape, despite being more comprehensive and accessible than ever before, is beset with misinformation, siloed echo chambers and a bewildering complexity. Society is predicated on trust and social context. The essence of collective capacity is to share understanding and build upon it, trusting the information we share with each other means we can cultivate innovative solutions to emergent problems.
By rethinking our information landscape from an agent centric perspective Coasys has redrawn the trust lines between us so we can augment the plethora of data we generate with context and provenance. To achieve this they are developing the ADAM layer, previously AD4M, an interoperability spanning layer and Synergy Engine. They have also developed Flux, a social toolkit application, that uses ADAM to access information across data domains while retaining the benefits of locally held, private, peer-to-peer connections. Rather than perpetuating an ever more impenetrable information landscape, by integrating Synergy Engine, Coasys will improve “the public’s capacity to sense-make as a collective by providing the infrastructure for an open, interoperable web, as well as the tools to improve our ability to find and share reliable information and coordinate effectively at any scale or complexity.”
With Synergy Engine Coasys are building a next generation search engine which can be directed to source information using ADAM from across the existing client-side Web2 internet, within the peer-to-peer, agent-centric, environment of Holochain, and the wider Web3 and semantic web.
To ensure data sovereignty the user, or agent, chooses what information is shared and how. Imagine different social contexts in which you share specific information or Perspectives; some with friends, something else with family and again something else with work colleagues. When using an ADAM app, like Flux, agents record their data to their own, local, ADAM node. This data is referred to as Expressions and a collection of linked Expressions is known as a Perspective. Agents can then choose the Perspectives they share via peer-to-peer connection to community spaces called Neighbourhoods. These social spaces are made up of differing social graphs (friends, family, colleagues etc.) so Perspectives are shared from their own, private, node rather than using centralised servers. Flux integrates locally run Channels for messaging, forums, video, audio and project management to provide peer access to your Perspectives, allowing collaborative, collective intelligence to proliferate among those with whom you chose to share your Expressions and not with those you don’t.
Synergy Engine enables querying of this local and Neighbourhood data and attribution of the results. The agent resolving each query is acknowledged and recorded to what’s called the Social Stack, allowing provenance to be defined and used to discover contextual patterns and semantic landscapes; leveraging peer group knowledge and analysis.
To ensure Synergy Engine has the longevity of a sustainable ecosystem, SynergyFuel, a mutual credit currency, is used to reward participating agents. Query initiating agents allocate an amount of SynergyFuel to their query which is only released once it is resolved. To augment the search capacity of Synergy Engine all participants involved in resolving queries are rewarded; not just the query resolver but also those who pass the query to other agents. Imagine a query is generated and 10 units of SynergyFuel are allocated to it using a smart contract which are then ‘reserved’ in a vault to prevent double-spending. The initiating agent shares their query with their friends using a trust-atom (by TrustGraph) and while it’s possible that their friends know the answer and resolve the query, it’s often likely that no-one within their social circle has the answer. Broadening the search parameters beyond their Neighbourhood improves the chances of a successful resolution to the query. To achieve this agents share queries with those they think are able to resolve it and each time they do, known as a hop, the previous agent’s trust-atom is shared too. This cryptographic signing of the query path records agents as a Social Stack. When the result is returned the initiating-turned-receiving agent verifies the answer, then completes the smart contract, releasing the SynergyFuel from the vault to all of the agents recorded on the Social Stack.
“Democratizing the information economy“ - Nicolas Luck
To incentivise the passing of the query until it is resolved the entire Social Stack is rewarded for their participation, with all agents’ hops and the resolver’s reward being allocated from our notional 10 SynergyFuel as they see fit. This incentivised participation cleverly encourages the passing agents not to be too avaricious with their hop fees as it reduces the remaining reward, thereby discouraging query resolution and the likelihood of vault payments being released to all. By doing this it encourages networks of Social Stacks. As Synergy Engine gains adoption social collaboration and collective intelligence will emerge. By identifying this intelligence, the SynergyFuel market dynamics will incentivise agents to self-organise into synergistic patterns such as ADAM Social Organisms.
ADAM Social Organisms are a specific type of ADAM Neighbourhood that embody a group of agents that can be perceived as a single agent from an external viewpoint. This facilitates group coherence, enabling the collective to act and respond as one. In the future such ADAM Social Organisms will be able to register as legal entities using the DAO LLC framework.
“In a world that is entirely agent-centric and distributed, collective sense-making and decision-making become crucial yet challenging to achieve.”
- Coasys Whitepaper
These patterns will also reveal shared Perspectives across networks, enabling queries of diverse social graphs initiates sensemaking beyond our own social circle. Maintaining provenance of the query data chain allows us to see that diversity, engage with it and discover shared understanding.
By appending the agent’s Decentralized IDentifier, or DID, to their Expressions and Perspectives, provenance is included in the query responses. This allows our queringy agent to specify that the data found is, for example; vetted by 10 (different) agents, and that each of the agents is KYC’d with some authority, or alternatively, known by 100 of their friends. The capacity to specify provenance parameters when using Synergy Engine supercharges sense-making performance.
As each Expression and Perspective is cryptographically signed with the agent’s DID they are incentivised to share authentic, verifiable information, and only with those they believe will help to resolve the query, if they hope to be rewarded with SynergyFuel.
Coasys utilises AI within Synergy Engine to translate query inputs to the required Prolog language query, facilitating the writing of search parameters in the agent’s natural language rather than requiring them to have specialist coding knowledge. This AI support is via a local instance so all agent and query data is kept private rather than being used as source material for public AI datasets.
In the future, to further enhance the capabilities of Flux, Coasys will be opening up the integration of Channel types to third parties so all sorts of collaborative models and plug-ins can be used and offered via an app store. Coasys have built a common spec for UI components to assist developers called Perspective Views. Plans also include building p2p crypto payment functionality and DAO governance support for ADAM Social Organisms.
To fund their continuing development Coasys are offering a discounted pre-sale of SynergyFuel using an ERC-20 token on the Ethereum network called Synergy Token. The $SYN token will be eligible for a 1-to-1 swap for SynergyFuel when the Synergy Engine goes live. You can register for the pre-sale here!
The Coasys project is stewarded by a non-profit DAO LLC and the goal is to transition their Ethereum-based DAO over to an ADAM Social Organism as soon as the implementation is finished and tested.
