Neighbourhoods is an online application framework where a group, organisation or community can form their own individual ‘Neighbourhood’ of online groupware applets, or small modular applications.
Each ‘Neighbourhood’ has at least one ‘Community Activator’ acting as a coordinator to set up the space, and administer the group over time using a no-code wizard. Activators choose the applets that are appropriate to their Neighbourhood. The project team has several applets in development including; ‘To Do’ lists, Chat and Feed functions, an offers and needs exchange and a time tracker, among others. It’s also here that the group’s sensemaking data is presented in the Neighbourhood’s dashboard.
Flowing throughout Neighbourhoods is the capacity to use their Sensemaker functionality to track, store and analyse collective data. By helping groups to form and to configure their own rating ‘language’ such as icons, emojis or votes, each Neighbourhood can build personalised environments of applets and data measurement algorithms. Each Neighbourhood is specifically designed for each particular group not the data mining industry. Like with other Holochain apps, a group’s Neighbourhood can be copied by members to create new groups.
Crucially the social data shared to a Neighbourhood is transparent and optional. Community Activators will define the data required to use the group’s applets and sensemaking tools. Applet developers will not have access to any of the Neighbourhood’s data, unless they happen to also be a member of the group. Users will have the choice of agreeing to share their data, or not, if they want to join a Neighbourhood. On their personal dashboard users will find data analysis and visualisation tools to interpret their own data, and of the Neighbourhoods they are part of. Should a user decide to leave a Neighbourhood, or join a new one, they’ll take their data with them, consistent with Holochain’s agent-centric philosophy.
The next development phase will deliver the Neighbourhoods Bazaar (formerly their tokenized software marketplace) where third-party developers can offer their applets to users. The Bazaar uses unique metadata tracking so usage statistics are recorded and the developers’ contributions can be equitably rewarded using $NHT, or another agreed upon currency. Additionally, if using the Neighbourhoods ERC-20 cryptocurrency, launched in 2021, there will be no transaction fee for exchanges in the Bazaar.
“Effectively Venturing Together” - Emaline Friedman, Neighbourhoods Co-Founder
Unlike the uninspiring web2 environment we currently use, a Neighbourhoods, or a group of Neighbourhoods can crowdfund staked pools for applet development. This shared funding model helps to establish a sustainable market for developer talent to build what users need. To assist the third-party applet developers the Neighbourhoods Foundation have released an applet template tool which provides the basic structure needed to develop and test applets.
True to their ethos of community sense-making, Neighbourhoods have encompassed $NHT holders in the collective governance of the Bazaar too. Through secure voting, holders will be able to participate in functions such as reserve management and fee structures.
The Neighbourhoods Foundation are currently working with select groups, DAOs and organisations to inform their development as they move towards their Alpha release in the Fall. One of the groups Emaline Friedman is most excited to be working with is Stanford University’s Zero Degree Collaboratory.
The Foundation, based in Aotearoa/New Zealand, has committed to maintain their Sensemaker tooling as a free and open-source technology. The entire Neighbourhoods framework is one of collective effort to succeed together through sensemaking derived shared intention. It flows through the framework between users, groups and developers who are all empowered to affect it through how they actually use Neighbourhoods.
