Hi Superstar,
I have been thinking about the layoffs recently and last week, I came across a tweet that read, “The more you build your talent stack, the safer and more secured you are as an employee or jobseeker”. That made me reminisce on Pat Flynn's book, How to Be Better at Almost Everything: Learn Anything Quickly, Stack Your Skills, Dominate. In the book, he talked about his experience being a Specialist and how despite that, he was dispensable and never won at anything but when he started building his mindset on upskilling and trying out different interests, he made his first hundred thousand dollars, was happy and felt “at peace”.
I have come to understand that the best way to achieve career success is to start building a talent stack. Because the honest truth is that very few of us can be the best in the world with one skill but becoming good at multiple skills is a better success strategy for most people. In today's rapidly changing job market, companies are seeking employees who have diverse skill sets and can bring a fresh perspective to their work.
Thinking like a generalist can be a powerful approach to a successful career. Instead of focusing solely on a specific skill or field, generalists take a holistic view and strive to understand how different areas intersect and influence one another.
Moreover, generalists have the advantage of being able to see the big picture and connect the dots between different disciplines and fields. This ability to synthesize information and understand how different pieces fit together can lead to creative and innovative solutions to problems.
Another benefit of being a generalist is the ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with people from different fields and backgrounds. Our world is interconnected, which is why it is more important than ever to be able to work with others who have diverse perspectives and skill sets. By having a broad range of knowledge and skills, generalists are better equipped to understand and effectively communicate with others, leading to more productive and creative collaboration.
Of course, being a generalist doesn't mean neglecting the importance of deep knowledge and expertise in a specific area. Rather, it means developing a balance between breadth and depth and being willing to learn and grow in a variety of areas.
The world is changing at an unprecedented pace and the traditional approach of specializing in one specific field is no longer enough to thrive. So, it's time to start expanding our horizons and embrace a more diverse range of knowledge and skills.
How to Build Your Mindset Towards Remote Interviews
Building a positive mindset towards remote interviews is key to ensuring a successful interview experience. Here are some tips to help you prepare:
Get comfortable with technology: Make sure you are familiar with the video conferencing platform that will be used for the interview and test it before the interview day to avoid technical difficulties.
Create a professional environment: Choose a quiet, well-lit space for the interview and make sure the background is professional and appropriate. Dress as you would for an in-person interview.
Be on time: Just like an in-person interview, being on time for a remote interview is crucial. Make sure to log in a few minutes before the scheduled start time to allow for any technical issues to be addressed.
Maintain eye contact: Maintaining eye contact during a remote interview can be challenging, but it is important to look directly at the camera when speaking to show engagement and professionalism.
Practice active listening: Pay close attention to the interviewer and engage in the conversation by asking questions and providing relevant information.
Take notes: It can be helpful to take notes during the interview to refer to later and ensure that you don't forget important details.
Be yourself: Despite the remote setting, try to be as relaxed and authentic as possible. The interviewer is still trying to get to know you and assess your fit for the role.
By following these tips, you can build a positive mindset towards remote interviews and increase your chances of success. Good luck!
