The Art of Using Words to Win Professionally
Little tricks to elevating yourself in the workplace.
Hi Superstar,
Firstly, from me to you - Happy Valentine's! This is a season of love, and a major way love is shown is through words. Words are one of my favorites because you can tell how a person feels about you through the way they speak to you. They have so much impact on our love life and also on our careers.
Words and attitudes play a significant role in elevating oneself in the workplace. By saying the right things, you can tremendously grow in your career in a short period of time. Your language and demeanor can convey confidence, professionalism, and leadership, making a positive impact on your colleagues and employers. Moreover, in remote work, you almost never have contact with your colleagues so knowing when and how to effectively communicate at work can help you reduce miscommunication and increase your credibility in being an indispensable employee.
Secondly, choose the words wisely. Your choice of words can influence how others perceive you and your ideas. Use positive language to convey your ideas and avoid negative language that can be seen as confrontational or critical. Example;
Instead of saying “I disagree”, You can say, “While I understand your perspective, I respectfully have a different viewpoint”.
OR
Instead of saying, “I don’t have time for this”, You can say, “ Unfortunately, I have other commitments that I need to attend to and won’t be able to handle this matter now. However, I will prioritize this at a more appropriate time”.
Lastly, be mindful of your tone. In virtual conversations, tone of voice can convey a lot about your attitude and mood. Be mindful of how you speak, use a friendly and professional tone, and avoid coming across as confrontational or dismissive.
How to be The Most Liked Person at Work
Getting along with coworkers is an essential part of being successful at work. It makes the work environment more enjoyable, and it can also lead to better job opportunities, promotions, and positive references. To be the most liked person at work, there are a few things you can do.
Be Positive and Encouraging
People enjoy working with those who have a positive attitude. Be encouraging and uplifting with your coworkers, and you'll find that they'll respond in kind. When someone is struggling or having a bad day, offer a kind word or compliment. Celebrate their successes and encourage them when they fail. Remember, a little positivity can go a long way.
Be a Good Listener
Listening is a crucial part of building relationships with your coworkers. When someone is speaking to you, make sure you give them your full attention. Show interest in what they have to say and ask follow-up questions. If someone is struggling, offer to help in any way you can. Being a good listener will make you a valuable coworker and a great friend.
Respect Others' Boundaries
Respecting others' boundaries is important in any relationship, but especially in a work environment. Don't pry into someone's personal life if they don't want to share it with you. If someone is busy, don't interrupt them unless it's essential. And always be mindful of your coworkers' feelings and emotions.
Set Boundaries, and lead by Example
Set boundaries for yourself, and then stick to them. If you have certain hours of the evening or weekends that you don’t log into your email or take phone calls, don’t. Most people are afraid to unplug, as they don’t want to be considered lazy or unreliable. You can help them to unplug by doing it yourself. The truth is that everyone is better off when they have a little work-life balance, and you can be the person to encourage it.
Give Credit where Credit is due
Be the person in the room who shows respect by giving credit where credit is due. If you’re being acknowledged for a certain success that you didn’t achieve alone, publicly share your gratitude for your team and even call people out specifically for their contributions. This will be well-received and appreciated.
Don't Gossip
Gossiping is never a good idea, especially in the workplace. Not only does it create a negative work environment, but it can also damage your relationships with your coworkers. If you hear something that you're unsure about, don't spread it around. Instead, approach the person directly and ask for clarification. Keep your conversations positive and professional.
Tricks to Elevating Yourself in a Remote Workplace
In today's competitive workplace, it can be challenging to stand out and make a name for yourself. However, there are some little tricks that you can use to elevate yourself in the workplace and achieve greater success. Here are some tips that can help:
Focus on Your Strengths: One of the most effective ways to elevate yourself in the workplace is to focus on your strengths. Identify the areas where you excel and find ways to leverage them to benefit your team and organization. This will help you stand out as a valuable asset and increase your value to your employer.
Be a Problem Solver: Another way to elevate yourself in the workplace is to be a problem solver. When faced with a challenge, don't just point out the issues, but come up with solutions and take the initiative to implement them. This will show your colleagues and managers that you are proactive, solution-oriented, and capable of tackling difficult problems.
Network and Build Relationships: Building relationships with colleagues, mentors, and industry leaders can help you gain exposure, learn new skills, and identify new opportunities. Attend industry events, participate in company-sponsored activities, and join professional associations to expand your network and connect with other professionals.
Stay Positive and Professional: Your attitude and behavior can have a significant impact on your career success. Stay positive and professional, even in challenging situations, and maintain a can-do attitude. This will help you build a reputation as someone who is reliable, competent, and easy to work with.
Continuously Learn and Develop: In today's rapidly changing work environment, it's essential to continuously learn and develop new skills. Take advantage of training programs, attend conferences and seminars, and pursue professional certifications to stay up-to-date with the latest trends and best practices in your field.
Be Visible and Vocal: Lastly, don't be afraid to speak up and share your ideas and opinions. Offer to present at team meetings, contribute to industry publications, and participate in company-wide initiatives. This will help you increase your visibility, establish yourself as a thought leader, and gain the respect and recognition of your colleagues and managers.
