⚽ Beckham - I know little about football (soccer). I was never a sporty kid. Beyond arm's length supporting of Newcastle United over the years and great excitement for England in major tournaments it is only in the last couple of years that I have become more interested in the sport, because both of my sons have become obsessed with it. This four-part documentary follows the career of David Beckham, who was best-known for playing for a team I always had a dislike of: Manchester United. Back then I didn't like him because he married the Spice Girl I fancied the most, and he always looked perfect... But this documentary has not only made me warm to him, but also to his Man U team mates of that late 90s, early 2000s era. The absolute hate this man had to put up with, the intense media pressure... I don't know how he survived. He comes across really well and I was completely absorbed. Even if you're not a football fan, I would almost bet you'll find much to keep you engaged, just looking back at the pop culture of the time. Highly recommended.

🎂 Is It Cake - not one you’d expect on a horror writer’s list, but I’m a dad, and no doubt lots of my subscribers are parents. Sometimes there’s a bit of chicanery going on with this show, but my kids really enjoy watching it, and I get a kick out of it too. A game show about cakes disguised as everyday objects… this shouldn’t be a thing… this can’t possibly work… and yet it does. There are some fantastic bakers on this, whose work ascends into art.

I have been recording a lot of stuff on 'Legend', recently, especially the 'Vintage Vault' slot on Sunday evenings.

I'm catching up with some absolute classics - I loved watching 'The House That Dripped Blood ' last night. What a cast. Peter Cushing, Sir Christopher Lee, loads of great British stars including Jon Pertwee and Denholm Elliot, too, to name only a few. Great stories, all tied together (in the style the studio used to do so well( around a particular house with evil at its heart. Classic stuff!

I'm just watching 'The Socerers', from 1967 (almost as old as me!) Boris Karloff, and a young Ian Ogilvie. All trippy psychedelic stuff, about hypnosis and mind control. Worth watching for Karloff alone, of course, but as a piece of social history, it's also really good. It captures 1960's London exceptionally well.

I have several more awaiting my needing to be filled evenings... 'Dr Jekyll and Sister Hyde', 'The Curse of Frankenstein', 'The Blood on Satan's Claw', 'The Gorgon', 'Dracula' (the 1958 version), 'The Mummy's Tomb', and several more.

When I've worked my way through these (!) I have just treated myself to the M. Night Shyamalan trilogy - 'Unbreakable ', 'Split', and 'Glass'. I have seen the first two several times, but never got round to 'Glass'. I've been assured it's the best of the three, so it's going to be very good indeed, in that case! I want to see them all, preferably one after another, so that's a cracking weekend organised, there!

And, getting more current, I'm looking forward to watching 'Ferrari', as well as the second season of 'From Dusk 'Till Dawn' - the TV series. I didn't get into the first season to begin with, then started binging on loads of episodes, and it really worked better that way. I suppose because I am so familiar with the film, it wasn't working for me in small chunks. So, I'm waiting until I have loads of season 2 recorded, and will be watching several!

All great escapism ;-)

And very much needed, right now.

Hope you're managing to get back into your stride, it won't be long before your wonderful academic work is completed- a superb achievement and I'm so proud of what you've managed to accomplish. Bravo!!

And here's to the next phase of your writing taking off. Superb stuff... I have already got the existing Victorian Vampire series awaiting me, in my Kindle library. I bought them last year, then life got crazy, and I didn't do a lot of reading. I definitely need to start again. And do some writing... stories, I mean! There's still far too many 'official' letters that need my attention, and I'm sick of the sight of my laptop because of that. It's put a massive crimp in my creativity, alright. Oh well... one day... !

Keep up the great work, Jack. You're almost there the now, bonnie lad! (I always want to revert to my native dialect when I think about you! 😂)

xXx

I still need to watch that Glass movie. I like the others in the trilogy.

I’ve not heard of Legend before - is it a streaming app, or a Sky channel or something?

Penultimate essay is going in this week - almost done with it today. Hopefully get it submitted tomorrow night.

🤼‍♀️ G.L.O.W - I started watching this show right as I was getting rid of Netflix, but now I’ve taken on a subscription again, it’s time to watch it all. Great first season. Lots of laughs, the odd smack in the feels, great performances. I’ll report back as I progress…

🏎️ Ford vs Ferrari/Le Mans - you can’t beat a bit of Christian Bale, and Matt Damon’s bloody good too. I’m not a racing fan, but enjoy the odd racing movie. Bank holiday Monday, kids at their mum’s, writing and studies done for the day, it was the perfect movie to relax with. Exhilarating, fun, solid movie.
