I still look at the stats on the NSW health website every Friday. Last week it was 844 in hospital, 23 in ICU and 51 DEAD in NSW. These stats are enough for me to ensure precautions like wearing a mask at the supermarket, doctors or any indoor space where closer contact may be unavoidable. This is not difficult. Yes, we have forgone eating at a restaurant or cafe once in a while because the tables are too close together and it is crowded, but we haven’t had Covid yet. There are enough people around with long-Covid to tell me to avoid getting Covid as long as possible. Why can’t the SMH print these statistics on the front page of the website or paper somewhere near the masthead every day? It’s only one line.

Supermarket: Mask on
Restaurants: Eat outside.
Friends over?: any more than 4, outside
Theatre: Forget it
Planes: Avoid them

I am fully vaccinated and work in schools.
I avoided COVID until my neighbours, on Christmas day told me they were COVID-positive.
I did a test and found, although asymptomatic, I was COVID-positive.
I had a very quiet Christmas and 4 days later I was tested again and COVID-free.
It is a luck of the draw situation. But, I put the asymptomatic case down to being fully vaccinated.
I have to wait until June for my 5th jab. I will continue to be responsible and get further recommended vaccinations as they become available. Just like the annual 'Flu shot.

I haven't had Covid yet either. I am 65+ and about to have number 5 shot. I have worked from home since March 2020 and only occasionally need to be in close quarters for work purposes, but have done so when required and unavoidable. I wear an N95 mask in public transport (including 4 plane journeys), in the supermarket and shops. I avoid pubs, restaurants and social gatherings indoors but not totally. I haven't exactly isolated from friends and family (who have all pretty much had Covid). I don't put this down to luck , I think it is mostly being cautious and masked, but I expect one day I will pick it up. I still try to avoid infection as I have some health issues and Long Covid is my main concern.

Thanks for this article. So many people thinking covid is over. For those of us who are retired and live in the sub tropics of Queensland, it isn't that hard to avoid if you make the effort and are prepared to change some things and miss out on others. I get groceries delivered and mask when I have to go to the shops and eat and drink at outdoor venues. Of course luck still plays a part in and extended family members can bring it in to the house. I don't have grandchildren so that helps. I no longer go to the gym. A lot of my everyday social life occurs at the dog park!
No doubt my turn will come but I am doing everything I can not to get it and looking forward to the 5th vaccination. I feel for those in more inclement parts of Australia because it must be tough for those who a re really trying to avoid it. Being a hermit comes to mind.

My daughter inlaw had a baby last March. The baby was aged 4 weeks when she caught covid , which was confirmed by a test done at the hospital. The other two young children and her husband all got it as well yet she avoided it as far as she knows as she did RAT tests constantly. 4 weeks later the same scenario happened again and again she was fine. She had also been breast feeding the whole time.Go figure.

I managed to avoid COVID until just after Christmas 2022. Four vaccines, always wearing masks in public indoor areas and on public transport (KN95 masks for past year), social distancing from people in public (and on trains/trams) as much as possible, meeting friends outside and working from home. Even did international flights to Europe. Caught it from an extended family member who stayed over Christmas.

Let’s make all aspects of life extremely safe and sanitised.

Or let's get Covid and end up with Long Covid or dead!

You're not getting any younger so your risk profile is increasing every day. What if you suddenly are diagnosed with cancer and have to go through chemo? You definitely don't want to catch COVID for the first time when your immune system is down. If you've previously had infection, the chances of survival even during chemo is far far higher if you have hybrid immunity rather than relying on vaccinations alone.
(Reply)—
Not true : with new variants if you catch it is like first time. People with immuno-compromised bodies could die. Until we have the right vaccination and right antivirals I prefer to follow the good doc example!
Young people "suddenly dying from" and "MOST AT RISK" from HEART ATTACK! Guess what they NEVER consider, NOR MENTION as a possible cause? (*Watch their faces closely)
When science has been bought & propagandised, it ceases to be “science.”
It becomes CRIME.
I have a better chance of dying from dioxin in my water since I live about 50 miles from E. Palestine, OH.
I enjoyed this - thanks John. Regarding public comments on news sites in Australia, so many of them are bots designed to influence public opinion - weaponised from the 'nudge' teams. But yeah...there are people out there who still think like that.
