Canzano: Mountain West plays on with UNLV question in the air
“Is the Pac-12 still coming after UNLV?”
LAS VEGAS — Hold up. Are we supposed to believe that UNLV is broke? Broker than broke?!? You wouldn’t know it from the red carpet the school rolled out on Saturday inside its campus basketball arena, the Thomas & Mack Center.
The “House That Tark Built” was all dressed up for the Mountain West Conference Tournament title game. But it was last week that Runnin’ Rebels Athletic Director Erick Harper showed up at a Nevada Board of Regents meeting, put his hands in his pockets, pulled out lint, and announced that UNLV could only afford to pay the first two years of football coach Dan Mullen’s five-year contract.
After some uproar, the AD checked his other pockets and announced he misspoke. The Rebels have the money. UNLV’s AD said the school is good for Mullen’s entire $17.5 million and has the funds to pay all its coaching contracts. Then, maybe just to prove it, Harper fired men’s basketball coach Kevin Kruger on Saturday.
