The streets swell with ganja and piss.
New York is smelly like this.
Rats bigger than cats, the tang of garbage all over.
“Can I have a dollar?” says the poor man with the beautiful face,
Sitting on the filthy pavement.
Do you think he was Jesus?
What parent gives their child a gun, when they ask for bread? Uncle says war is the way to keep his friends rich in their beds. “Can I have a dollar?” said the poor man with the pretty eyes, He was wearing sandals. Do you think he was Jesus? We see the world through our own lens, but do we realize the ending? Love and loss, the struggle crosses us, ‘till we break from bending. “Can I have a dollar?” said the stranger with the gorgeous smile, “I'm starving” Do you think he was Jesus? © John Munnelly August 2022
