Thank you so much to everyone that joined my first draw-along. A toast to Downton and cheers to you!
Here is the recording and a PDF of the slides I used:
Next time I won’t prattle on so much because it’s incredibly difficult to draw and chat! I don’t want y’all to feel obligated to chat while you concentrate.
As Lady Sybil told Gwen: “No one hits the bull's eye with the first arrow.”
I’ll see you in a few weeks (date TBD) for the 2nd Downton themed session: seasons 3 + 4. Fair warning, I may be mean and throw in a car to draw. I resisted the urge for this round, but whew, how I wanted to throw in this beauty:
And since I googled that, I now know they make Christmas ornaments of that car and I must have it.
And speaking of next time:
Please also feel free to comment with your thoughts!
A few things mentioned during the draw-along:
The crystal champagne coupe (and all the other drinkware) from the show. I incorrectly called it a ‘goblet’ like an absolute degenerate and shall face my dismissal from high society.
The Downton Abbey rose collection for those of you wishing to challenge Violet with a green thumb.
Apologies, I’m not sure who shared this, but Edith Wharton’s ‘The Buccaneers’ about American women who moved to London to marry earls & dukes and extend their fortunes. Hello, Cora! I’ve added to my reading list—thank you.
Helen Stark’s substack. She’s being incredibly modest about the content she’s sharing–it’s a 12/10 on the charm scale!
- - we’d love to see the room you did with the villainous branding!
Catarina Oliveira and her portrait skills. That’s my sweet baby Steve!
I guess I didn’t mention this, but Cora’s lilac dress was the inspiration for this middle grade piece I did last year. Did I mention I love villains?
That’s enough for now, my dear fellows! Stay tuned for the next one. And thank you again for such a lovely time.

I am also excited about the car, and I can’t choose from your four categories - I think each one would make an excellent draw-along theme, so I’m sorry to say, you’ll have to do at least four more Downton Abbey themed sessions! ;) For a glimpse at the rooms my husband and I designed for Etsy, you can see peeks here (about halfway down the page): https://www.jengubicza.com/projects These were three “phone booth” style rooms we did for Etsy employees to make private phone calls in, since there was an open office design at the corporate HQ. The Villain Room is the one in the center, and I’m sorry there isn’t a photo of the bottles and other little trinkets inside. There was a cape and helmet so you could dress appropriately on your call. And evil plans and blueprints. There was also a tiny room filled with giant plush office supplies and another room that you entered like a phone booth and was filled with tons of tiny cabinets floating on the walls and each cabinet contained a different object or surprise inside that you could discover when you opened each one. We also got to design a space station conference room and commissioned artists to make quilt "views into outer space" that hung in each window. Such weird, fun projects that we were given basically free reign on!
Thank you again for today’s session! It was so much fun and I’m really excited to draw the car in the session, I may start practicing now 🤗
