Katerina’s Point Of View
I got home late, shortly after family dinner had begun. After flipping off my heels and scrunching my toes, I sighed, then walked along the hallway toward the living, dining, and kitchen areas. Familiar laughter and chatter wafted toward me like a comforting blanket beckoning me into the nest.
I joined my family; everyone stood, hugged, and kissed me lovingly. I returned to the hearth my son and daughter-in-law had created for our close-knit family group.
I was pleased the day had gone so well. Peter bought a new car in a beautiful color, we acquired a new lover to share the occasional night of fun, and I had Diana’s father’s location.
With a stainless steel ladle in hand, Amy pointed at my plate, and I smiled back, nodding. She served my dinner from an enormous cast iron casserole pot at the center of the table. Beautifully cooked chicken meat cleaved slowly off the bone once a portion rested on my plate, almost like my meal was taking a bow.
Amid a delicious-smelling ocean of expanding gravy on my brilliant white, porcelain bowl-like plate, chestnut mushrooms floated tantalizingly. Most of all, I would enjoy the perfectly ripened, al dente French beans served separately, but I would not devour an entire portion of garlic creamy mashed potato Amy heaped on my plate.
“Coq au Vin is always an incredible dish, especially when served with garlic and creamy mashed potato, but I think Diana excelled herself this time, Katerina.”
“Our wonderful chef constantly surprises me, Amy.”
