Diana’s Point Of View
After I got home and set about my daily routine, getting Billy out of my head was impossible.
I saw the real him; he saw me, and we understood each other. Reciting Pi with him felt like how poets describe their art. Before leaving the institute, I gave personal details and signed forms so Doctor Wilson could vet me and assign security credentials.
Billy’s parents were delighted that their son finally had an adult friend with whom he had connected and that we planned to meet soon. His Mom cried down the phone when we spoke, reinforcing to me how lonely my new best friend must have been.
After we got home, there was a flurry of activity, with family members, including Rania, coming and leaving, some glancing nervously at me as though they held back a secret. Their movements and phone calls behind closed doors had something to do with my father, but I stayed out of their interventions in my life, trusting my employer and growing circle of friends to do what was needed.
I had a party of one for lunch. Amy looked hungry and in need of a rest.
“I made chicken broth for you. It’s wholesome and comforting; you can dip fresh bread in it.”
“I would eat anything you made, Diana. I trust you.”
“I like being here.”
“Everyone loves Diana. You are a hit at the Brooklyn offices, too.”
“I’m dropping off baked treats at your foundation starting next week.”
“Do you have a car?”
“No.”
“Would you like to pick one? That might make these deliveries easier. Are you using taxis right now?”
