“...This is the solstice, the still point
of the sun, its cusp and midnight,
the year’s threshold
and unlocking, where the past
lets go of and becomes the future;
the place of caught breath, the door
of a vanished house left ajar...”―Margaret Atwood,Eating Fire : Selected Poetry, 1965-95
Regardless of how you’ve been spending the last week or so, and I sincerely it has been a time of beauty and rest and celebration, it is without doubt a liminal time.
The structure of the day to day, our usual routines and even days of the week are well out of reach. Like airports or waiting in hospital lounges time stretches and snaps back and the price of things defies comprehension!
I also read a very apt thing a couple of days ago, a meme of sorts on instagram that said this time of year is an amplifier and I couldn’t agree more.
If you’re dealing with grief it is all the more difficult to wade through at this time of year, if you’re newly in love or a recent success has left you feeling ecstatic the highs are imbued into every moment of the day.
You’re either relishing in the company of loved ones or bunkering down to get through a hard couple of weeks. There doesn’t seem to be much in-between.
If this has been a hard time for you I hope you have care and support, please know you’re not as alone as it feels.
Where I am on the sunny Gold Coast of the east coast of Australia we have been enjoying classic Aussie Summer weather for the first time in years. Hot tropical 30 deg days with wild tropical storms to cool off (and scare you a little) in the evening.
I’ve been allowing myself to catch my breath and pause. There is so much I am eager to launch into in the new year. But this reflective moment is necessary and I encourage you to do the best you can to take care of yourself and allow this process.
Relentless productivity was never meant to be our human experience and we would do well to remember it.
This ability to pause and listen and tune in is a skill that when we apply it in small day to day ways, can become invaluable in bigger seasons of our life. Whether that inner voice is saying slow down or just as essentially GO! Grab the opportunity and Fly!
It’s been a sporadic year here on Substack but my inner voice, ever eager for me to sit down and write, assures me that this is a place that I intend to spend more and more time in next year.
To thank you for being here and valuing my writing and teachings paid subscribers can scroll down and enjoy the worksheets I created for a weekend workshop for women in Peri-Menopause. It was a valuable weekend and I look forward to sharing more in this way in the new year. I’ll be available in the comments to answer your questions.
And a reminder for my new subscribers that this article in the archives is here for you too.
Sending you all a heart felt thank you for being on the receiving end of my thoughts and feelings in word form. I look forward to seeing you in the new year.
