I wanted to share a list of rules that I have compiled over the last 2 decades while being a “Bridge Builder” when trying to solve organizational issues. I see the same dynamics happening now and I know from experience that if you follow these rules, you will have breakthroughs.
Rules for Restorers
Be Respectful. Respect must be given to be received.
Be Empathetic. Understand the situation from the other side’s perspective
Use the Platinum Rule. Do unto others as they would want done to them.
Every complaint must be accompanied by a possible solution.
Crawl. Walk. Run. Incremental improvements over time are more important than the mythical “perfect solution.”
As you use the rules, you will see each one build off the other in the order listed and as the last rule suggests, your initial slow crawling attempts to be respectful will soon speed up to a full run in fixing complex problems.
The reason I consider these “Rules for Restorers”, is much like playing any other game, be it poker, chess, or basketball, the rules need to be followed by ALL PLAYERS. Once a player breaks the rules and repeatedly ignores them, such as being disrespectful, then you just identified that this person needs to be replaced with a Moral Professional.
I know there are a lot of amazing problem-solvers in this community. What we need is leaders who want to be those bridge builders and be able to build paths to solutions.
