How To Wear A Tuxedo Shirt And Boxers
My collaboration with Chava Studio is live and I haven't been able to stop wearing it.
Ok, like two years ago Olivia from Chava Studio gifted me one of her perfect tuxedo shirts. I wore it all the time, and since the shirts from Chava are made to order (at an atelier in Mexico City!) I asked if she could make one in navy. Thus, the seed of an idea was born. It took us a while to get it right, but over that time we worked on a beautiful collab - and now it’s here! Introducing the AM/PM Tux! The shirt is a gorgeous navy poplin (it took Olivia forever to find the right poplin - this one is super fine - in the perfect dark navy) with a contrasting bib, but tonal buttons (swoon!) and French cuffs. The boxers are my perfect spring/summer shorts - lightweight, zero branding, comfortable, elastic waist… ugh, a dream. I’ve had this sample set for a while, and I wore the shorts and shirt all summer, to Paris last fall, to a ton of parties and I always get asked about it and now….it’s here!
Isn’t it good?? This was honestly just something Olivia and I wanted to exist in the world. Just a very beautiful thing, made to order (sustainable!), and made in a way that you’ll wear it for years and years until it’s paper thin and part of you. That’s the goal.
What does one do with a navy tuxedo shirt and boxers? How useful could they actually be? And how many ways can you wear a tux shirt and boxers? Oh! I’m so glad you asked:
I don’t know why photoshop is giving me such a weird gray pallor, graphic designer I am not, however - LOOK HOW CUTE! I tried to style it in both formal and informal ways because the shirt truly is so versatile. It’s great with more navy (1), great in a very casual school boy way (5), with sequins and heels (4, duh) - honestly I can’t stop wearing these heels - and with denim.
You know when you’d do something at school and you’d be so proud you wanted to hold it and shake it in front of your parents’ faces and be like SEE?!?!?! SEEEEEE?!?!?!?! That’s how I feel right now.
BUT beyond that, something like this is so genius in your wardrobe because it is more formal than a regular button down, but then casually is also more interesting than a tee shirt. It’s been one of my go-to’s since I got it.
But what about the shorts? I love them because they kind of give the vibe of the no pants things, but with more coverage. I love tiny shorts!
For something as casual as a pair of boxer shorts, they’re surprisingly versatile! The deep navy is so nice, it’s more gentle than black, but also so much more neutral than a true color. Also if you wear them with a wet swim suit, you won’t get a super noticeable dark splotch over your crotch and butt. I hate that.
But sure, they’re a bit more specific and trickier than the shirt - you likely can’t get away with wearing them to work (unless one of your jobs is newsletter-writer in which case…), but they easily go from mega casual (1) to fairly dressy (6) - you can’t see the detail of the Row blazer I’m wearing here, but check it out on my Reels, I swear, it’s a fancy look. I wore it this fall to the Zegna x Elder Statesman party and felt very polished and cute.
And there! A handful of ways I will and would wear a tux shirt and boxers. I will wear and love these forever. Thank you, Olivia, for letting this dream live in the real world! I’ve always wanted to make something like this, in a way like this, and I’m just so, so, so pleased and happy.
Your friend,
Laurel
