Pre-microwave, carbon on kernels was the norm
There was a time when microwave popcorn didn’t exist. This, because microwaves themselves were the stuff of science fiction. They were a mere fantasy in the minds of 1970s parents and kids who hoped upon hope that their leftovers would one day take just seconds to reheat. Similarly, there was a hope that one day - one day - there would be a way to make popcorn that didn’t include carbon as a standard ingredient.
Hot oil (or butter) in a pan, kernels in when oil is heated, caution thrown to the wind. That was the way it was done.
