THE INTEGRAL CINEMA PROJECT is a Research, Production, and Educational Initiative Exploring the Application of Integral Theory for Cinematic Arts Theory and Practice. The mission and purpose of the Integral Cinema Project is to develop and test a comprehensive model for Integral cinematic arts theory, development, production, and distribution and share this work with the public.
Research History
I started the Integral Cinema Project in 2008 with fiscal sponsorship from the San Francisco Film Society and a research grant from Integral Institute while doing my Post-Doctoral certificate work in Integral Studies at Fielding Graduate University. In 2010 I published my article Toward an Integral Cinema which presented the results of my first attempt to apply Integral Theory to cinematic media.
As part of my research I developed and tested a testing criteria for structures of cinematic consciousness along with a cinematic design methodology to help media creators create integrally-informed media works. This testing included the use of this methodology in clinical trails for Project Catch-IT, an NIH funded research project at the University of Chicago and University of Illinois at Chicago Medical Schools. The results showed great promise.
This whole process led to a more comprehensive testing framework that was developed in part by going deeper into the process of applying Integral Theory to as many dimensions of the cinematic medium as possible. I did this through the research and publication of a web article series on Integral Life called the Integral Cinema Studio.
Next I applied Integral Theory to cinematic media analysis itself to research and develop my testing and design methodologies further. I published this research in a journal article on Integral Cinematic Analysis.
I went even deeper into the research by doing a meta-analysis of the co-evolution of the moving image, consciousness, culture and society. I then began to try to share the data I was collecting by creating an online timeline for others to use for this type of research. It is still an ongoing process to translate the data to this timeline.
I also attempted to apply this approach to moving image metrics to see if it was possible to transcend the divide between the creative, financial and experiential domains of media. The result was the development of a modal for an Integrally-informed moving image metrics for minimizing risk, maximizing creativity and profit, and optimizing viewer experience.
During my research and testing I also discovered a moving image viewing practice that appeared to increase the transformative potential of the viewing experience. I then developed a course in the practice and taught it through the MetaIntegral Foundation.
During all of this research, development and teaching I continued to test individual moving image works for structures of consciousness and started to post the ongoing results of the integrally-formed cinematic works I was discovering online on the Internet Movie Database (IMDb) in 2015 and am attempting to continue this the best I can.
In 2019 I developed and co-taught the first course in Transformative Media Creation and Reception at Campus Co-Evolve bringing together all the research and development to share with media creators and consumers.
The collaborative educational process of this course supercharged the research process with input from the learning community. This led to new discoveries in the transformative potential of perception practices.
We also developed and released a video course series for change makers to help them use Integrally-informed transformative approaches to media in their efforts to transform the world.
Deep gratitude to Ken Wilber for the inspiration of his work and for his personal support and guidance on this journey; to my co-researchers along the way

Introduction
Toward an Integral Cinema
As part of my research I developed and tested a testing criteria for structures of cinematic consciousness along with a cinematic design methodology to help media creators create integrally-informed media works. This testing included the use of this methodology in clinical trails for Project Catch-IT, an NIH funded research project at the University of Chicago and University of Illinois at Chicago Medical Schools. The results showed great promise.
Project Catch-IT
This whole process led to a more comprehensive testing framework that was developed in part by going deeper into the process of applying Integral Theory to as many dimensions of the cinematic medium as possible. I did this through the research and publication of a web article series on Integral Life called the Integral Cinema Studio.
Integral Cinema Studio: A Comprehensive Guide to the Cinematic Experience
Next I applied Integral Theory to cinematic media analysis itself to research and develop my testing and design methodologies further. I published this research in a journal article on Integral Cinematic Analysis.
Integral Cinematic Analysis
I went even deeper into the research by doing a meta-analysis of the co-evolution of the moving image, consciousness, culture and society. I then began to try to share the data I was collecting by creating an online timeline for others to use for this type of research. It is still an ongoing process to translate the data to this timeline.
The Co-Evolution of the Moving Image, Consciousness, Culture, and Society Timeline
Meta-Cinemetrics
During my research and testing I also discovered a moving image viewing practice that appeared to increase the transformative potential of the viewing experience. I then developed a course in the practice and taught it through the MetaIntegral Foundation.
Meta-Movieology
During all of this research, development and teaching I continued to test individual moving image works for structures of consciousness and started to post the ongoing results of the integrally-formed cinematic works I was discovering online on the Internet Movie Database (IMDb) in 2015 and am attempting to continue this the best I can.
Integral Movie and TV List
I also shared the results and the process behind the testing in a public talk at Bay Area Integral in 2016.
Integral Goes to the Movies (Video)
Additional applications included an Integrally-informed approach to understanding the language of the moving image…
Holo-Cinematics
And to media literacy…
Media Literacy for a Post-Truth Age
In 2019 I developed and co-taught the first course in Transformative Media Creation and Reception at Campus Co-Evolve bringing together all the research and development to share with media creators and consumers.
Transformative Media Creation & Reception (Course)
The collaborative educational process of this course supercharged the research process with input from the learning community. This led to new discoveries in the transformative potential of perception practices.
Perception Practices and Transformative Media
The learning community also led to discoveries in the use of media to accelerate individual and collective evolutionary development.
Using Media to Accelerate Individual & Collective Evolution (Video)
We also developed and released a video course series for change makers to help them use Integrally-informed transformative approaches to media in their efforts to transform the world.
