CANADA
A note from our lead Canada researcher:
As high as it is—higher even than the toll in Italy, although Canada has a much smaller population—the weekly toll that we have been recording in these compilations is much lower than it ought to be, due to the terseness of obituaries from some of Canada’s highly multicultural populations. The death notices from those communities are less detailed than those from the general population.
There is a similar void of information in our northern regions. It is extremely difficult to find death notices of any kind for those communities, whose rate of “sudden deaths” may well be hidden. What all this means, in short, is that the true rate of “sudden deaths” in Canada is probably much higher–perhaps five times higher–than the quite high rate that we’ve recorded here.
A note on suicides:
Suicides by young people are up 22% during the pandemic in Canada and 17 other countries (and it’s why we’re including suicides in our compilations):

Note: Obituaries from Ontario will appear next week.

A passionate academic, she earned a doctorate from Johns Hopkins University, a master’s from the University of British Columbia, and a bachelor of arts from Colorado College. Above all else, Elizabeth loved working with people. She had over a dozen active doctoral students under her supervision and mentored many more. To those who knew her best, she was a devoted friend who fought the hardest for those who needed her strength the most. In 2020, Elizabeth was recognized with a UNB Merit Award for her outstanding contributions to teaching, research and university service.
In B.C., an Olympic rower “died suddenly”:
Jonathan Barrington Beare, 49
October 6, 2023
He was active in many sports, and in high school became passionate about rowing, eventually competing in three Olympics and winning a Bronze medal in Beijing. After retirement from competition he served as the Athlete Director for the Rowing Canada Board. He subsequently became a partner in Hudson Boat Works, a leading maker of rowing shells, and contributed to its substantial growth. And it was through rowing that he met Danielle, the love of his life. His manner was calm and open, he was intellectually curious and invariably positive, and he was a great friend to his many friends. A beloved partner in life to Danielle, a cherished and super supportive father to Mya and Rhys, a source of great pride to his parents John and the late Janny Beare, and a wonderful brother to Michael and Kimberley. Taken from us much too soon by colorectal cancer, which he faced with courage and acceptance.

In British Columbia, a pilot “died suddenly”:
Noreen Newton
October 6, 2023
How do you say goodbye to a loyal friend, sister, daughter, and co-worker? To a fiercely devoted and loving mother, and an inspiring and beautiful person whose upward gaze never wavered from the open skies? With a heavy heart. On September 25, 2023, Captain Noreen Newton, a trailblazing female aviator, writer, and woman’s advocate succumbed to a brief but devastating battle with cancer. Known for her dedication to advancing women in aviation, Noreen challenged industry barriers and prevailing, male dominated ideologies throughout her 36-year career as a commercial airline pilot. She became one of Jazz Aviation’s first female captains, holding the position on various aircraft, including the Dash8-400, British Aerospace 146, and Canadair Regional Jet (CRJ). Noreen Newton has been an airline pilot for almost four decades and became an award-winning scholar at the age of 60. Now, as the Victoria, BC, resident hangs up her captain’s wings, her next career is taking off.

September 12, 2023
It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of Dr. Mary Agnes Kilfoil. Mary passed away peacefully at her home, in Halifax Nova Scotia, on September 7th, 2023. Mary lived life with infinite love, grace, generosity, and selfless devotion to family, friends, and community. She was a woman of remarkable achievements and boundless energy. Mary held graduate degrees from Dalhousie University (Ph.D., Economics) and Carleton University (M.A., Economics) and as well as undergraduate degrees in economics (Saint Mary’s University) and business administration (St. FX University). Recently she was nearing completion of a pilot project with the Tourism Industry Association of Nova Scotia which addressed a labour shortage in the tourism sector while at the same time demonstrating the positive impact of “purpose” in people’s health outcomes. Her memory will forever live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and colleagues. She leaves behind a legacy of innovation, kindness, and an unwavering dedication to fostering entrepreneurship that will extend for generations to come. Donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

William "Willie: MacIsaac, 69
October 5, 2023
William Mathias MacIsaac, age 69, of Ohio, Antigonish County, died suddenly on October 1, 2023, next to his tractor and surrounded by the cows on the family farm where he was born and worked all his life. He was always there for his family and he spent lots of time with his grandchildren whom he loved dearly. He took them on tractor drives, taught them about farming and showed them how to feed apples to the cows right out of their hands. A favorite family activity was riding on the back of the truck during Sunday drives through the Keppoch, while Willie went extra fast through the puddles, trying to splash everyone. Willie was a member of the Antigonish County Volunteer Fire Department for thirty years. He never missed a fireman’s meeting, and he went to every fire, no matter what time of day his pager went off, and helped in any way he could. He drove a school bus full time, and worked on buses at the school bus garage from 1983 to 2022. His love for driving buses never stopped and he drove right up until the day he died.

My unending question shall remain: why is no one being investigated by the RCMP or Provincial Police - seems logical to me when folk die in mysterious circumstances that law enforcement might, just maybe take even the slightest interest. What I can only conclude is that the same instigators have been given implicit permission, with a guarantee of never being investigated, prosecuted, jailed or executed, so they can do the same again, but worse. Troubling is an understatement.
