CANADA
A note from our lead Canada researcher:
As high as it is—higher even than the toll in Italy, although Canada has a much smaller population—the weekly toll that we have been recording in these compilations is much lower than it ought to be, due to the terseness of obituaries from some of Canada’s highly multicultural populations. The death notices from those communities are less detailed than those from the general population.
There is a similar void of information in our northern regions. It is extremely difficult to find death notices of any kind for those communities, whose rate of “sudden deaths” may well be hidden. What all this means, in short, is that the true rate of “sudden deaths” in Canada is probably much higher–perhaps five times higher–than the quite high rate that we’ve recorded here.
A note on suicides:
Suicides by young people are up 22% during the pandemic in Canada and 17 other countries (and it’s why we’re including suicides in our compilations):

Highway 401 reopens near Ajax following fatal crash
October 23, 2023
All lanes of Highway 401 have reopened between Ajax and Whitby following a fatal collision that scattered debris all over the highway. The crash happened at around 8:45 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of the busy highway near Lake Ridge Road. Ontario Provincial Police say that preliminary investigation has revealed that the driver of a car slowed down for reasons that remain unknown, causing a tractor trailer to slam into the rear of their vehicle and push it into a median. Debris is pictured scattered across Highway 401 following a rollover collision near Ajax Monday, October 23, 2023. The driver of the car, who has been identified as a 25-year-old woman, was rushed to hospital following the collision, however she was later pronounced dead. OPP say that the trailer on the tractor trailer separated after the impact of the crash. Aerial footage from the scene showed what appeared to be cardboard scattered all over the roadway.

Danny Coneen, 65
September 30, 2023
It is with deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of Danny Coneen, who left us suddenly and far too early, on September 26th, 2023, due to complications following a brief illness. He was 20 years old when he moved to Halifax and got his first job. Between then and retirement from FedEx in the fall of 2022, Danny had many different jobs and wore many hats. You might have worked with him at the Keg, the Economy Shoe Shop or the Bermuda Film Festival. Maybe you hired his landscaping company – Trimmin’ Some Bush. You were sure to see Danny in his many roles in the film/music and entertainment industries of Nova Scotia over the years. If you were lucky, you may have spotted him teaching folks how to milk a cow for the Dairy Farmers of Canada, or driving a school bus full of kids, always with a smile (and sometimes with a colorful word). Danny introduced many of us to “Orphans Christmas /Thanksgiving”, when his friends didn’t have a place to go for the holidays. He loved to cook and entertain, and his kitchen was always full of love and laughter.

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved brother and uncle, Robert Allan Thorne on Friday, October 13, 2023. Working for over 40 years in a handful of kitchens, Rob adored his work family and the community they provided. Never a dull shift, from his start at McDonald’s, to the Castle and North Star Inns, then onto the Cape Breton institution, Jasper’s, and finally, Casino Nova Scotia, where he hung up his work apron for the last time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Unexpectedly, after a short illness, Mickey left our world along with holes in the hearts of his daughter Amanda (T.J.), and precious granddaughter Harper. Along with his wife, they opened their home to many over the years, and he is sure to be missed by each person whose life he was a part of. Per Mickey’s wishes, cremation has taken place, and his ashes are to be spread in the exact same spots as his beautiful wife’s were just a few years ago.
