Texting is back, baby! That’s right, with the advent of the Year of the Rabbit, Tomek and I have returned with a new season of your favorite podcast for textual deviants! Press play to hear episode 1 of season 2!
This week, as promised, Tomek and I discuss the songs of the late great Christine Anne Perfect McVie, with particular attention paid to the manner in which she managed to express “strength in vulnerability” through her music. Of course, much of our chat focuses on the British songbird’s contributions to Fleetwood Mac, but we also touch briefly upon her 1984 solo record and then consider her legacy in relation to that of other women of rock such as Janis Joplin, Aretha Franklin, Joni Mitchell, Linda Ronstadt, and (inevitably) Stevie Nicks. Time constraints prevented us from discussing the romantic relationship between the self-styled “hook queen” and Beach Boys drummer Dennis Wilson (who also had some interesting interactions with certain female members of the Manson Family), but you will no doubt be gratified to hear Tomek’s reminiscences about family road trips through the American Southwest, when his parents blasted Rumours from the speakers of their station wagon as they sped down I-10 (or at least that’s how I imagine it). Oh, and that song by Peter Green whose title I couldn’t think of was “Oh Well (Parts 1 and 2)”:
Next week’s text: Donuts by J Dilla. (Yes, it seems we’re in music mode for the time being.)
The answer to last week’s trivia question is . . . Traumnovelle by Arthur Schnitzler. I recently read the Penguin Modern Classics translation (with a cover featuring artwork by Gustav Klimt) and can’t recommend it enough. 5 stars all the way!
P.S. Texting is now a video as well as an audio podcast! I’ll be posting the video version of this week’s episode on my YouTube channel later this week! Subscribe to receive notifications of new episodes of Texting as well as other Mark Will-related videos!
