Today’s hed gif is pumping up the jams with Belgian group Technotronic. The song “Pump Up the Jam” was their first single on their album of the same name, released 1989. The song, with its synthy melding of hip hop beats and deep house sound became a club hit worldwide, topping charts in ‘89 and ‘90.
The lyrics were written and sung Congolese–Belgian singer and songwriter Ya Kid K (a.k.a. Manuela Barbara Kamosi Moaso Djogi). The woman in the video, however, is lip syncing Congolese model Felly Kilingi. Ya Kid K was involved in school and another hip-hop group at the time the record company wanted a “face” to promote the song, so they employed Felly to fill the role, both in the video on on record cover art. Subsequently, Ya Kid K has been recognized and credited for her contribution to this popular dance hit.
