Interview with 3rd Echo Sounds
Here it is, the first post! Sorry it has taken so long.
Steven from 3rd Echo Sounds is has created some great music for Super Power Racing and I recently had a chance to catch up with him.
Can you tell me a bit about 3rd Echo Sounds?
3rd Echo Sounds is the brand name that I came up with to market my music under. The music I write is typically described as “dark, gritty, post-apocalyptic, haunting, mysterious and driven.”
So after tons of bad ideas I found one that evokes those feelings. Something that reminds you of an ashy wasteland.
I think it’s cool, it is cool, right?
What made you get into music?
Well I’ve always loved music. Growing up, my Mom was into pop, alternative and oldies; While my Dad listened mainly to heavy metal, hard rock and film soundtracks.
So I was exposed to a broad spectrum of sounds from a young age and developed a passion for music in many forms, this lead me to searching for more and more genres to listen to.
I was 11 when I found out that I could play a song by ear when I played “Emmanuel” on my parents’ upright piano after hearing it on the radio. Though it wasn’t until 8 years later that I was introduced to FL Studio through a friend and I jumped straight down the rabbit hole that is music composing. Actually the first night I tried FL Studio, my Dad thought I was playing a video game and liked the music.
When I told him it was something I had made, he told me that I had found my calling and should pursue music as a career. So I’ve been at it since.
Would you like to tell everyone about your work on Super Power Racing?
Alright, so first and foremost, it was challenging. James mentioned that he was looking for more dance oriented tunes for this game - something WAAAY out of my element, as my niche is gritty soundscapes and atmospheric music. So building something with a beat you can dance to was certainly not yet in my toolkit. But given the history James and I have, (I did voice over work for his previous game "Alien Scumbags"), I told him that I was up for the challenge. And after the first few tracks were rejected and he gave me the option of backing out, I succeeded with a track that impressed him. That sense if achievement carried me through the rest of the project, and I'm so excited to hear my music in the gameplay footage! Please check it out and have a blast with it!
Where can everyone find your music?
My primary hub is Twitter. I share a lot of works in progress, finished tracks, and short sound design sessions on there.
@3rdEchoSounds is my handle! I also add new tracks to my SoundCloud and YouTube channels periodically, and shortly will have a couple of albums for sale on BandCamp. Stay tuned for updates on that.
You can hear one of the tracks below in the official trailer for Super Power Racing.
