SXSW here I come! I will be repping Music Club in Austin this year and attending the Music portion March 13-16. If you will be there or know of anyone that is attending or performing, please let me know. I’d love to meet new people in the industry and of course, check out music and new artists!
In the last newsletter I shared my Breakout Artists of 2024 (list here) and I am beyond excited (me = 🤩) that the 1st Human Algorithm Takeover of 2024 is featuring one of the artists! For those that are new to Music Club, I call mixes shared in the club Human Algorithm Mixes (HA for short) and throughout the year, I feature special guests from the music world in what I call the Human Algorithm Takeover (previous guests here).
Last August, I came across the song “Repique” on my Spotify Discovery or Release Radar. After listening, I immediately clicked on the artist Bauhouse, started listening to his EP Same As Always (where this song was the first track) and posted on IG as recommended listening. Bauhouse, who goes by Agustin, responded kindly. Since then, he has released 3 EPs that I’ve gravitated towards. He has an ability to effortlessly create genre-bending songs that blend some of my fav sub-genres (House, Disco, Funk, Global beats), kinda like how Bonobo and Barry Can’t Swim do.
Please welcome Brazilian DJ and Producer Bauhouse and give his exclusive Music Club mix a listen. I’ve listened to it a couple times already and it will have you moving - whether you are listening at work or from home, cleaning the house or having friends over. It’s a versatile set that I think music lovers of any genre would enjoy! It includes some standout tracks from DJ Koze, Solomun, Tears for Fears and of course Bauhouse himself.

Why music - how did you get into DJing and producing, what about it keeps you going?
From a very young age, I was exposed to very fine and well-curated playlists by my parents, listening to “the Beatles” albums non-stop in the car going to school, Robbie Williams, Keane, black-eyed peas, Santana, and many more eclectic bands and artists which taught me very valuable lessons on what truly makes a good song. Another unusual place where I got the majority of my musical background was in video games, specifically “Rockstar” games such as the “GTA” game series and “Midnight Club” which is a street racing game I used to play A LOT, those guys at “Rockstar” sure know how to curate videogame playlists.
The DJing and producing part came later when I was 12/13 when I started to listen heavily to electronic music and that’s when I was introduced to producing itself by my older brother, if it weren’t for him I wouldn’t even think of making music, but because I’ve always been curious as to how things work and always needed somewhere to express my creativity, producing electronic music became a blessing, the DJing part came along later as a consequence of the music production.
The thing that keeps me fueled to make music is the need that I have to produce music, not only because I love it, but also because I need it. Another important factor is the community around it, the reaction people get when they listen to my songs, and the connections that it creates inspire me immensely, music truly is powerful and it is necessary for anyone.
I find it hard nowadays to lump artists under one genre. Listening to your music, there's some house, funk, jazz. How would you best describe your sound?
I’m a firm believer in that statement, nowadays it’s so hard to categorize music and it may sometimes be harmful to the artists because it limits them from being more creative and experimenting with new things, all because they want to do one specific genre. My approach is that I make music that I like without trying to put it into one specific category (although sometimes I do end up doing songs with one specific genre in mind), but if I were to categorize it, it would mainly be House music, with heavy influences from everything that surrounds my day to day, such as Hip-Hop, Rock, Jazz, Funk, Disco and every possible genre of electronic music you could think of. I’m always trying to draw inspiration from anywhere which helps me broaden my spectrum of knowledge and achieve a unique sound which I think is extremely important nowadays, even more so because everyone tries to be a copy of someone else (as a way of following a formula which shows results but only in the short term). Being individual is the thing artists should focus on in my honest opinion.
Listening to your music reminds me of some of my favorite DJ/producers - Bonobo, Barry Can't Swim, O'Flynn. What artists inspire you?
Thank you for the amazing comparisons, happy to be put up in that level of artistry! Interestingly enough those artists you mention have many similarities to my main inspirations, them being: Disclosure, Solomun, Duke Dumont, Shadow Child, Keinemusik (very recently), the notorious duo Daft Punk, and the list goes on, but you get the idea. I wouldn’t be able to pinpoint my main inspiration but an approximate junction between all those artists would turn out to be my type of music.
What are some things on your music bucket list?
Some parties and festivals I'd love to play are Heavy Love & Cardume (which are some local parties here in São Paulo), Kappa Futur, Boiler Room, Cercle Festival, Time Warp, Dekmantel, Warehouse project, Printworks, Defected Croatia and many other amazing venues, but my holy grail would be to play at Lollapalooza Brazil. When I went there for the first time when I was 15 years old, I was so amazed by the magnitude of the festival and it was also the first time I saw my favorite DJs at the time such as Don Diablo, Tchami, Oliver Heldens, Flume, and Martin Garrix. Ever since that weekend I made myself a promise that I would eventually play Lolla Brazil.
An artist I would love to collaborate with would be Duke Dumont, Disclosure, or Thomas Bangalter (one of the robots from Daft Punk), I'm sure some true bangers would come out of those collaborations. One collaboration I'll try getting out of this year will be with Mochakk, we’ve tried doing one before but it wasn’t successful, though if 2024 is good to me, I hope we'll be able to do something together.
You released a lot of tunes last year. What are you focusing on this year?
This year I'm focusing on exploring new sounds and genres such as afro house and progressive (which is new to me), but also making sure to maintain my essence (continuing to make some house bangers). There’s also a release that I'm very proud of coming out on the 22nd of March through “Nervous Records”, so save the date because that release will be huge! In regards to shows and tours, the idea is to play more gigs here in my hometown in São Paulo and eventually, if it’s possible, play a gig internationally in Europe or South America.
