They’re back. Birthday freebies. Diner deals.
By whatever name you want to call them, they offer special dining incentives to loyal customers who can want a free dessert, a discount on a fancy meal or a buy-one-get-one special.
My birthday is Sunday, and you can bet I’ve been closely watching my email for birthday deals. This is the first batch of meals and treats, but I assure you, I will keep them coming well into March.

I’ve been asked many times where people can find the best birthday deals. How many of them are available in Des Moines? As of Saturday, I’ve already received more than a dozen offers.
Let’s take desserts, for example. Some restaurants allow for a free dessert with entree purchase. Others offer a free sweet treat. You’ll also get an occasional free appetizer deal.
There are discounts for entree purchases and a buy-one-get-one offer.
And then there’s my favorite deal: A free meal with no strings attached.

You may ask: Why are all these restaurants giving away food? (Or at least appearing to do so.)
There are benefits for the businesses. Getting customers in the door is a win. A freebie will build loyalty to brands. And they’re hoping that when you show up with a coupon in hand or in their app, that you’ll buy a meal just to get that free item. And patrons are likely to bring in one or more guests.
To lock in your deals, don’t wait until your birthday to start signing up. Search online for your favorite restaurant’s website and search for key words like “Birthday Club,” “Rewards” or similar language. You will be required to register (another business benefit — building a database for promotion) with an email address, or download the app on your phone.
