Dorothy, I stole your shoes: John's fall fashion revue
A look back at fall, from September to December
“There’s no place like home.”
I started hearing that line frequently this fall — whenever I wore a pair of red, sparkly shoes.
Suddenly, Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz was competing with Santa for attention. That’s fine with me, if my clothing choices can bring a smile to someone’s face.

Here’s a look at my Fall Fashion Revue, from traditional Autumn colors to Christmas season offerings.
It was an unusually warm December in Iowa, one that allowed me to wear short sleeves and leave my heavy winter coat at home.
One warm, sunny day inspired me to wear my short sleeve “Surfin’ Santa” shirt in December. The last time I wore it was in July. In this anything goes weather, it was a fun choice.

December allows me to wear a lot of Christmas suits and jackets. There’s the suit from the movie “A Christmas Story,” ugly holiday sweaters and whimsical jackets, and even a few goofy costumes.
Fall 2023 ran from September 23 to December 21. It’s a fashion season that is associated with colors like brown, maroon, orange and yellow. There are fun opportunities for Halloween and Christmas outfits.
For men’s wear, a hot trend this season was corduroy pants. I noticed finer men’s stores like Dillard’s and Brooks Brothers started selling cords, from drab green to bright mustard yellow to outlandish purple and fuchsia.

A restaurant server spotted my outfit one evening, eyed me up and down and shouted, “Cords are coming back!”
Cords used to be relatively out of style. It’s fashion trend I associate with my teen years in the 1970s. The material is thick and a bit warmer than most pants, so it can be a nice seasonal choice for days that are mild in the Midwest.
My most notable fall color choice was a heavy tan and white coat from Fairfield-based Overland Sheepskin Company. It’s a delightful store known for high quality (and frequently pricey) outerwear.
