Mapping Your Solar and Green Roof Potential
The Northern Virginia Regional Commission (NVRC) provides two tools for homeowners and businesses to determine the solar and green roof potential of their home or commercial building. NVRC is the first entity in the Commonwealth to provide these tools.
NoVA Solar Map
This tool was created as part of NVRC’s Solarize NoVA campaigns with its local government partners, the Local Energy Alliance Program (LEAP) and local solar installers to give property owners a birds-eye view of the solar potential of their rooftop. The tool calculates the potential size of the solar array that may fit on the roof, the potential electricity dollar value savings and the amount of annual greenhouse gas emissions averted. Certainly nothing takes the place of an actual on-site inspection, but the map provides the starting point for any conversation on putting solar on a rooftop.

NoVA Green Roof Map
Released in the Summer of 2022 NVRC published an interactive tool to help building owners determine the Green Roof potential of their property. The tool depicts the green roof potential of buildings within the Region’s urban core (Arlington County, Fairfax County, Cities of Alexandria, Fairfax and Falls Church).
In the five jurisdictions, there are 541,248,585 square feet of potential usable green roof. That square footage of green roof has the potential to capture 8.7 billion gallons of rainwater on annual basis and offset annually,119,345 tons of CO2 with projected potential annual energy savings of $146.1 million dollars.
