Relatively Minor
Laughter does not have to come from a major source. It could indeed be ... relatively minor.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Play for All Inclusive Playground took place at noon Saturday, marking its official opening. This project was initiated by the Winterset Rotary Club and the Parks and Recreation Department with the primary goal of creating a playground that could be enjoyed by everyone, regardless of their abilities or disabilities.
When I heard about the “all-inclusive” playground, I assumed it meant bears were welcome. So, I donned my apparel and asked my husband to chauffeur me to the festivities since my big furry belly made it impossible for me to drive.
Years ago, I purchased a costume resembling the bear who lives in the Big Blue House, a character from a children’s program that debuted in 1997. The main character of the series is a kind and lovable bear who serves as a caregiver for his friends, including a bear cub, a mouse, a lemur, otters, and a storyteller.
As a Rotary member, I knew I would be welcomed on the premises. However, I was surprised to learn that my furry presence delighted older children ... while younger ones ran screaming into the stratosphere. Parents softened the blow by acknowledging that their seemingly terrified children didn’t like the Easter Bunny either. I thought that was rather strange since the extremely tall white rabbit is synonymous with chocolate. And what kid would turn down such a treat, even if it was in the shape of an egg?
Adults, on the other hand, thought I was the greatest thing since sliced bread. A brisk wind that day meant cooler temperatures. Almost every other person I met on my way around the grounds told me I was dressed properly for the occasion. They were even willing trade places to retreat from the chill.
I remember that day fondly. Although some kids didn’t welcome me with open arms, others were willing to stand by me while mom or grandma took their picture. It was a true Kodiak moment.

That sounds like great fun!
Hi Susan,
Yes, it was "bearable" to say the least! However, I think it took the whole Rotary Club to get me up
off of the ground.
