It’s still very much so winter here in the Pacific Northwest, but I have my eye firmly on spring, aka trench coat season.
Given my deep appreciation for a good winter coat, it’s no surprise that trench coats (among most transitional coats) rank high on my list of wardrobe staples. For the past few years I’ve relied heavily on this Attire trench coat, but this year I’m planning to add a cotton, and maybe even a leather one, to the mix.
Traditionally, trench coats are made of ‘gaberdine’ (invented by Thomas Burberry in the 1800’s who eventually popularized the style beyond military use) which is a heavy-duty, cotton and/or wool that has been waterproofed with lanolin before weaving. They are typically double-breasted, with 10 front buttons, wide lapels, a storm flap, pockets that button-close, a belt at the waist, raglan sleeves and cuff straps at the wrist.
Today, trench coats come in countless fabrics and styles - the classic trench, a car coat, a robe coat, cotton, wool, linen, silk, polyester, nylon, khaki, green, grey, black - the options are endless.
Personally, for an everyday trench that will see some rain, I prefer something with a high percentage of cotton or wool that has been water-proofed (unless I’m intentionally looking for something with more drape in which case I will look for something with linen, silk or sustainably produced viscose). This will maximize breathability and, if it’s 100% cotton or wool, make it easier to recycle at the end of its life. Synthetic fibers like polyester and nylon add durability and waterproofing, but contrary to most advertising, are less breathable and hold more odor.
The Classic Trench Coat
Mango has an excellent collection of trench coats at an affordable price point. In addition to the ones mentioned above, this paired back option ($160) feels like something Princess Di would sport with a baseball cap and jeans.
I also really love this one and this one from The Frankie Shop that are both currently sold out. Notifications set!
And I would be remissed not to mention this Wardrobe NYC one that’s currently 25% off in black and khaki at Saks.
The Car Coat Trench
While not technically a trench coat, I’ve also been drawn to the oversized car coat. It accomplishes the same thing as a trench coat (light layer + some protection from the elements) but has a more relaxed, yet still polished, vibe.
I’m personally leaning towards the above Sezane option, but I’m also drawn to the Aritzia and Anine Bing options. My only beef with the Aritzia one is that it’s half-lined - not ideal, but not a deal breaker.
The Non-Khaki Trench
For those who are looking for something other than a khaki trench coat. I love the deeper browns and earth tones, but am also digging this burgundy situation.
The, Slightly, Unconventional Trench
I love a good classic, but I this might be my favorite section - classic with a twist.
This leather trench has been living rent free in my mind, but I’ve been waiting for more mild temps (and maybe a sale) to pull the trigger on it. I have the shorter version and love it.
I’ve also been drawn to the canvas colored trenches that feel like a breath of fresh air for spring. This Anne Quan one caught my eye first. Upon further investigation, this Nour Hammour one and this Sofia Richie Grainge x Solid & Stripe one fit the bill as well.
Chat soon! xx, Sarah
I’ve been eyeing Clyde as well and it sells like hot cakes! Those barely stay in stock.
Love this curation of trench coats! I own the Sezane trench coat and the fabric falls beautifully.
