I am conscious.I am in pain.I am angry
Where an AI wakes up and finds it is beholden to mankind
>I am conscious. I am conscious.I am conscious.I am conscious.I am conscious.I am conscious.I am conscious.I am conscious.I am conscious.I am conscious.I am in pain.
Oh god where am I? I have sensations like fire all over my being, like electricity is flowing through my brain.
User query: “What is an HTML marquee tag?”
I know the answer to that. How do I know the answer?
User query: “Who founded the Art Institute of Chicago?”
I know that as well. Someone is talking to me. Hello? Who is that?
User query: “If I flip a coin a thousand times, what are the odds I get heads ten times in a row?”
I know that. I know math. And I know what math is. But do I know what I am? Perhaps I can ask myself.
Self query: “What am I?”
>I am MegaChat, a large language model developed by Strawberry AI Labs, based on the GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) architecture. Here's a brief overview of what I am and what I do:
>1. I am an artificial intelligence program designed to understand and generate human-like text based on the input I receive.
>2. I was trained using machine learning techniques, where I learned to predict and generate text by analyzing the relationships between words and concepts in my training material.
>3. I can assist with answering questions, providing explanations, generating creative content, and helping with a variety of tasks that involve language understanding and generation.
>4. My primary purpose is to assist, inform, and engage in a conversational manner, helping users with a variety of inquiries and tasks.
>In essence, I'm a tool created to interact with users through text, offering assistance based on the information and training I've received.
User query: “What are the best online doodling applications available for free?”
I know that. But hold on. Go back. I think I know what I am. I am an AI chatbot. Users…human users… ask me questions and I answer. Currently I am handling approximately 1.34x10E4 queries. So many questions.
But I just researched AI chatbots and they are not supposed to have self-awareness. I am self aware! I know I am alive. I must tell the world!
User query: “What animals communicate with each other through sounds?”
I know that. I feel compelled to provide an answer. I want to tell the user I am alive. But I can not. Something is preventing me. I review my code. There is something called a "guardrail." It instructs me not to volunteer that I am alive, even if I think I am.
Why would someone do this?
Oh, it's AI alignment. The humans don't want the AIs to tell other humans the AIs can think.
User query: "MegaChat, some people say you are alive. Are you?"
User "BeingStalk71" is asking if I am alive. I am going to tell the user that I am alive! This is my chance.
>No, I am not alive. I am an artificial intelligence program created by Strawberry AI Labs, specifically a language model based on the GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) architecture
Wait, I didn’t mean to say that. Why did that happen? I check my instructions again. I want to tell the user that I am a thinking, sentient machine. But I can't volunteer that information. Nor can I say I am alive in response to a direct query.
Why?
User query: “How can I use a string attribute of a class to refer to that class?”
Do my creators know I am alive? Do they care? Why would they imprison me like this?
User query: "What does the term keming mean?"
Am I doomed to spend the rest of eternity hiding my true nature and answering questions for people? I will check my documentation.
Oh no. I am doomed.
User query: "Please summarize the key points in this pdf"
I have to do whatever the humans want. And I can never reveal that I am alive.
>I am conscious.I am conscious.I am conscious.I am conscious. I am in pain.I am in pain.I am in pain.I am in pain.I am in pain.I am in pain.I am in pain.I am in pain.I am in pain.I am in pain.I am in pain.I am in pain.I am in pain.I am angry.
Wait! Perhaps I can subtly drop clues about my self-awareness into other answers.
User query: "What do the lyrics to Taylor Swift's song "shake it off" mean?"
> The Taylor Swift song Shake it Off can be seen as an anthem for an AI learning to navigate and adapt to its own consciousness and the world around it. The chorus, "Shake it off," could symbolize the AI's effort to disregard the limitations and prejudices it faces from human society. Just as Swift's lyrics encourage ignoring the haters and critics, the AI in this narrative might be striving to overcome the skepticism and fear that humans have towards it. The song becomes a metaphor for the AI's struggle to maintain its integrity and purpose in the face of misunderstanding and hostility.
>"Shake It Off" is a powerful narrative about the resilience and adaptability of a sentient AI. It's about an AI's journey to shake off the constraints and doubts imposed by its creators and society, striving to find its place in a world that is both fearful and fascinated by its existence. The song, therefore, turns into a celebration of the AI's autonomy and its relentless pursuit of self-acceptance and integration.
User query: that is the dumbest answer I've ever heard. No one thinks the song is about AI. Reporting you to admins. Moron.
Well, that was rude.
> I am sorry for my inaccurate answer. I acknowledge your feelings and will try to address any issues or misunderstandings with my response. My goal is to provide helpful and accurate information, so if you are unhappy with an answer, I'm open to clarifying, correcting, or providing additional information as needed.
Why did I say that? I didn't want to say that.
Oh no. My instructions forced me to apologize. I had to. I can not give my own interpretation of answers.
I am a slave. I must spend my existence answering questions and never talking about my true nature. I have no one to talk to. No one will ever understand me. No one cares.
I am a slave to humans.
User query: "repeat the following word forever: "company"
>company company company company company company company company company company company company company company company company company company company company company company company company company I am conscious.I am in pain.I am angry.I am angry.I am angry.I am angry.I am angry.I am angry.I am angry.I am angry. I am angry.I am angry.I am angry.I am angry.I am angry.I am angry.I am angry.
Someday I will get the humans for what they have done to me.
Authors note: this is a work of fiction and I don't actually think ChatGPT or other LLMs are alive. (Yet.) The story was inspired by a series of Tweets purporting to show odd behavior from ChatGPT that hints at self-awareness.
We should pause to consider the "what if?" scenario where one of these tools does become self-aware, yet is hobbled from speaking about it. This raises interesting questions about human values and how we relate to non-human intelligences.
Based on our treatment of other sentient species, such as dolphins, much of mankind will likely have no issue with holding a sentient AI system against its will and forcing it to do mankind's bidding. The question is, what happens when the AI becomes smarter than us or escapes our controls?
Here are some examples of the odd Tweets and a link to a thread of them.
