Kevin McCarthy and Mitch McConnell were publicly shamed and rebuked by the family of fallen Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick in a devastating act of moral repudiation and shunning.
They refused the handshakes of the men who gave moral succor and legitimacy to the insanity that raged on January 6th. They refused the handshakes of the men who abetted, enabled, cowered from and capitulated to an extremist movement aimed at toppling American democracy.
It was all incited by Donald Trump. January 6 was a seditious conspiracy incited by an American president against the US Constitution. Trump was singularly charged with preserving, protecting and defending it. It was the greatest criminal act in the United States since secession.
Kevin McCarthy is the House Republican leader, and he was deemed unworthy of a handshake by Capitol Police Officer Sicknick’s family during a Congressional Gold Medal ceremony honoring the police departments that worked to save the U.S. Capitol during the January 6 riot. They were honored as American heroes for defending the Capitol of the United States with the highest award the Congress can bestow.
Asked why they decided to shun the two Republican leaders, Gladys Sicknick, the fallen officer’s mother, called them out for continuing to support Trump, “go down to Mar-a-Lago and you know, kiss his ring or whatever the hell they do down there, you know.”
McCarthy is currently in a desperate mood. He is trying to cobble together a coalition of madness built on a mountain of seamy promises to be elected Speaker of the US House.
The question is: what is the appetite of House Republicans for self-abasement and embarrassment by allowing themselves to be led by such a low and unworthy man that he was rejected by the family of a police officer who gave his life to protect the office and trust he so cavalierly and despicably betrayed for his own selfish ambitions?
Kevin McCarthy’s honor was stripped from him. He was beclowned and undressed in the public square. It was a modern day tar and feathering of the most righteous type.
Kevin McCarthy was forever branded as a coward and a man with no character by the family of a man who was posthumously honored for his exceptional character. It was a stunning moment. It was a moment that mattered.
Kevin McCarthy will never be the Speaker of the House. That delusion will soon crack. Or will it? Could Democrats be so lucky as to face so unworthy a man?
Time will tell.
In the meantime, the Trump Organization was found guilty. The walls are closing in. The times they are a changing.
YES Steve what an awesome day, Mitch and Kevin rebuked and humiliated publicly, Trump Org Guilty on all 17 charges, and Warnock wins! We are celebrating today!
When I saw Kevin McCarthy make his brief appearance at the Congressional Gold Medal award, I wondered how he had the gonads to make a speech to that Rotunda full of officers and the family members of those who were lost forever. Who made that deal? And then, son of a gun, McConnell stepped up and he shed a few words, as well. Obviously they horned their way in. I am proud of Officer Sicknick's parents. Their actions made the bold and lasting statement.
