Today’s PrimalMed Prescription…Boogie On !!!
No scrolling down to the TL;DR. Just Boogie On and have a great weekend!
So yesterday I am driving down Main St. on my way to the hospital. I was a bit late and I knew I had an 8 o’clock procedure on my schedule. I was hitting EVERY, I mean EVERY red light. I was 2 coffees deep and it was only 7:30 !!!
I was, shall we say, a BIT wired.
Now picture this. I’m at this red light and in the car next to me is some random dude. His windows are down and the music is blaring from his car. You know, the kind of loud where you just stare and think, “REALLY?”
Let’s see. We’ve got inflation raging, recession on the way, war in Ukraine, senseless shootings, climate change, tribal partisanship in seemingly all walks of life. It’s only April and already the Mets pitching is in shambles!
I’m late to work.
and THIS guy is listening to…
Boogie Fever
Zero F#$*ks Given. #ZFG
Not a care in the world. This guy is jamming to Boogie Fever and busting some moves in the drivers seat. At 7:30 in the morning.
So I took a pause.
What is it about jamming to a classic tune that puts you in a calm grounded state? How can that perfect tune make your stress melt away? Can it be something, dare I say, PRIMAL? Maybe this guy is on to something?
Consider the practice of sound healing, or Vibroacoustic or Music therapy. If we consider that our cells and mitochondria all possess an electric potential and vibrate at certain frequencies in response to sounds, MAYBE it explains why some sounds are so noxious and irritating and others bring joy and relaxation. The tribes in the Amazon gather around singing bowls and the Yogis stimulate their vagus nerves when they chant their “ Ohmmmms.”
Maybe some frequencies just make our mitochondria happy?
So what did I do?
I went to my Spotify app and found “Boogie Fever” by the Sylvers and let ‘er rip. And I sang out-loud. Windows closed.
BTW, there are hundred of songs about getting your boogie on. Whether you want to “Boogie on Reggae Woman,” or put on your “Boogie Shoes,” I would encourage you to take that all important 3 minute pause when you are feeling stressed. It’s a quick jolt to get you out of your fight or flight sympathetic overdrive and stimulate your vagus nerve and your parasympathetic tone.
The troubles of the world will still be there when you are done and you will still be a bit late for work, but maybe this quick musical reset is your much needed PrimalMed Prescription for the day. Your mitochondria will thank you.
It’s SPRING. Time to feel SUNNY!
So PLEASE share this post with friends and family and ANYONE who needs to get their boogie on!
So glad you enjoyed the post! Share it with your son. AND…good luck to him on his interviews!
I can’t believe I just read your post. My son just came home from an interview for an ICU residency program and they asked him what does he do to decompress. He told them it was all about the music the beats the soul music, Etta James, and they loved it.
